How to make money without selling anything

I love this forum, great questions, great people and great advice.

Lately I've seen lots of advice about how to make money selling stuff and I'd have to say that is so short sighted.

Here's why: "Don't Eat Your Corn."

OK, it's an old farmers saying, but a great one none the less. If you eat all your corn you have nothing to plant for next season. And while you'll be fat and happy for a while, you'll starve shortly thereafter.

If you plant your corn - or at least some of it, you can keep harvesting (getting paid) year after year. And here's how - don't sell anything.

LEASE IT. RENT IT. TIMESHARE IT... But don't sell it.

In particular, and what prompted this wee tale of grains and greed was something I saw a few days ago about making money with video.

Now video is cool, it rocks and no you don't need to be Spielberg to succeed in internet video. However, production commentary aside, you can make a mint with localized service oriented business videos.(You know the kind, for ABC who sells XYZ and hasn't the time, or the skill to create a short video that will rank with the search engines.)

Anyway, the advice offered was to call companies and offer to create them these short videos, sell it to them and charge a monthly fee for maintain if warranted.

Nah. Not my approach.

Find high demand locally searched phrases - here's one I'll give you a hint about: "emergency plumber in [your-town]"

Create a short video for the phrase and put some info on the video that helps the searcher and also offers THE FIRST COMPANY THAT CONTACTS YOU THE RIGHT TO RENT IT ...

You keep the asset. You don't eat your corn. If the client stops paying, or doesn't want to keep going, you switch to another client. Think of each video as a small advertising space and you control the media.

It's how the big guns roll. Why not you?

Remember, grow your asset base, and don't eat your corn.

Ahh, but infoproducts are like prostitution.

You got it. You sell it. You still got it.

        Hi James,
I guess this comes back to the old arguement of short term gain or long term security (by taking less to start with).
My business model is based on long term ongoing incomes. However many people need the cash now so have to take the money and run I understand that.

So true. When people are strapped or anxious for cash they tend to forgo long term gain. It's one of the reasons there's always a market for the "quick cash, make money now" offers. Just look at the TV ads for buying your "old gold!"

            Totally true James.

The biggest companies on the planet charge for a service. And the biggest rule in real estate is "Never Sell".

To sell stuff, you have to produce it, and that takes energy and recources.

However at the same time, you cant really rent a pizza now can you?

But it's SO tasty with a little butter and salt...

Great ideas - you can do this with web sites too, not just video. If you rank a web site for (to use your example) Emergency Plumber in Seattle, guess who may pay you to have THEIR phone number and name there?

Yes, but my infoproducts have less mileage after the fact. You crack me up man!

Like CDarklock said (albeit more eloquently than I ever could), most info-products "sold" are actually "licensed" - which means you can't resell them, for example, in the same way that you could resell corn.

But it's a really good idea if you're "selling" resell rights or other type of right (i.e. other than just accessing the information) - I've seen a few PLR sites where you pay monthly and once you stop paying you no longer have the right to sell any of the products.

    James,

    You opened my eyes.

Now I know the reason why many real estate owners in my country don't sell it these days. They either rent or lease it.

Truly, you can't eat your corn and have it.
