The Greatest Lesson Learned Being An Internet Marketer

I haven't been doing internet marketing for a long time (it's been about 3 years now), but from my experience with running various online businesses, I have come to the conclusion that the greatest lesson you'll learn with this business is that it is VERY humbling!

For example:

1.) You start a blogger blog, start making money, and then it gets banned.

2.) You start making 2 to 3 sales a day and then nothing for a long period of time.

3.) You begin getting a ton of traffic to your website's, and then all of a sudden, the traffic disappears.

4.) You consistently submit articles to directories and experience success (CTR, sales, e-mail sign-ups, etc.), and then the article directory either goes down, they ban your account, they demote your account, there is a sudden increase of competition, etc.

5.) You swear you have the greatest product known to man once you launch it and then it ends up being a flop.

6.) You hold first page rankings on Google and then your site/article disappears.

7.) Big companies that affect an internet marketer (search engines, article directories, web directories, web 2.0 sites, etc.) make constant changes that usually end up having a negative impact on your business.

And that's just a small sampling of what can occur with running an Internet business in my experience!

Now, what I have learned from all of this is that you have to:

A.) Diversify... Diversify... and DIVERSIFY!

B.) Never depend on a 3rd party source of traffic, sales, etc.

C.) Never give up if crap hits the fan.

D.) Focus more on running this as a "business" as opposed to something that makes you money.

E.) Focus more on long-term business models (such as e-mail marketing).

F.) Stay humble and always be willing to learn (even if you think you have all the answers).

Bottom line, it has been a crazy up-and-down experience for me running a business online (I originally had a full time offline business), but, I wouldn't trade it in for anything! The freedom, the fun, and the potential to make an obscene amount of money are the things that keep me going!

Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience with everyone and to hopefully help someone else deal with the frustrations of running an online business and to make it known that it CAN be a very rewarding and exciting venture.

Have A Great Day!

Avy

You are so right... Most of the stuff you said happened to me in the past.

I couldn't agree with you more about DIVERSIFYING

This IM game is crazy and you have to treat it like a real business if you truly want to succeed.

The most important thing in Im is "Being able to adapt". I remember one of the Google Slap when many publishers run out of business overnight.

Internet is really fast if it can make rags to riches then it can also make riches to rags. It's not easy. It takes effort and yeah if you don't enjoy it then sooner or later you will quit and start blaming whole world for your failure.

Always keep monitoring, testing and reviewing your sites too.

As long as you are on top of and aware of the changes as they happen, the more likely you will be to adapt in a positive way.

Also, never assume that because a certain method works for one site that it will always work or that it will work for other sites.

Great post... These are my 3 favorite solutions:

There are far too many people who give up at the first sign of adversity (or after the first month passes and they aren't millionaires like the "gurus" told them they would be!)

To be a true entrepreneur, whether you're working online or at a traditional brick and mortar business, you have to work hard, take some risks, realize that success can take some time to achieve, and never be too arrogant to learn something new.

Thanks, Avy, for giving us a boost this morning!

Thanks for such an interesting post.

Please excuse my attempt to add something to your list of "lessons potentially learned", but it strikes me that 3 or 4 of the 7 things you list as "problems" can usually be avoided by learning always to take great care over the terms of service of any third party sites on which you're choosing to allow your business to be dependent.

        Good point.

That was another one of my issues as far as just "assuming" how something works (article directory policies, proper SEO, etc.) instead of fully looking into it and adhering to guidelines to avoid possible problems later on down the line.

        Not always!

ToS change/evolve over time, and any one of them could decimate a
thriving business that's been running smoothly for YEARS.

Yes, it has happened to me!

    What a beautiful post!

But I have to add that my greatest lesson is that internet marketing is not as simple as some gurus paint it neither is it as difficult as some newbies imagine.

For someone who has been years in marketing world, i admit i must learn alot about online marketing.

It is totally different than offline marketing where you meet your clients everyday, and not much care about traffics to your website.

    You learn faster than many!

I've learned to always use a shotgun approach... if I need something to work I try several different methods all at once so I can be confident something will hit and make me cash.

Of course, when it hits I take the sniper approach. Zoom in on it, focus and easily start reeling in money.

I see it a lot with my clients... the best approach is to start small with little investment until you find what works, then attack it with all you got. Then repeat the process to diversify.

    Cheers,

A & C are too true. You have to mix things up and you have to stay dedicated to making your marketing efforts work. Its all too easy to give up, thats why a lot of people do it. Don't be the lots...be the few (the ones making money). Stick to your marketing efforts, if something doesn't work move on, don't give up. Expect the good in everything you do, but don't fret if you fall short. Anytime you learn something you've gained something. So don't take NOT making money as a loss, just be sure not to make money the same way twice!

Patience are the most important IMO, it takes time get traffic even if your quality are superb.
What I have learned so far is that it takes u too 6 month before you will see a greatly increase of traffic when launching a new site.

    Hi Avy

Thank you so much for your post.
I've done a video on this very subject, mainly because some Internet Marketers are treating the actual traffic strategies they are using as the actual business itself.

Whereas Facebook, You Tube, Google, etc can soon pull the rug out from under your feet if they decide they don't want you any more. if you rely on them too heavily, your business can be in serious trouble.

    Here's the video

    All the best

Thanks for posting the video. It is so true about building a list and how that is more of "business" compared to just trying to funnel traffic to affiliate products, products you own, CPA offers, etc.

I can't believe how much I procrastinated with finally jumping in to building a list. The funny thing is that my first list is not even a targeted buyer's list, and it's only around 350 subscribers, but I've managed to pull off several sales from it anyhow. That only makes me drool at what could possibly happen if I built a strong buyer's list, and follow all of the tips about how to treat a subscriber, etc. that I've learned about here on the Warrior Forum.

Thanks everyone for contributing to the thread!

    Hi Avy,
The greatest lesson I have learnt as an Internet marketer is to manage your time effectively to get those important things done first before you move to any other things.

For the past 3 years I have been wasting time, reading emails, checking out the latest product launch, the latest blog posts, the latest videos and reading hype up salescopy.

I have learnt to organize my time and prioritize my tasks first thing in the morning.

Get the important tasks done first before moving to other things.

Cultivating this habit takes hard work and discipline.

It is a virtue when one implemented it consistently every single day, doing productive tasks that make you money is a sure-fire way to success.

A big lesson for me has been to not assume anything.

A common one for me, is starting a campaign, and getting 200 clicks and 3 conversions. I then get all excited about the money I'm about to make and then my next 800 visitors bring 1 sale.

Its all about testing, being adaptable, and your absolutely right ajbarnes, its about treating it like a business.

Once you make the shift from "making money selling survey memberships on clickbank" to "I run a business as a web publisher\affiliate", it really helps you see things more long-term and make adapting more easy, rather then limiting yourself to a particular money making method.

Nowadays I'm practically obsessed with diversifying and being able to flow with any changes in the economy....ANY changes.

    Good observation.

Seriously, and I'm DEAD serious about this...building a
list online and focusing on selling products to a proven
list of buyers offline (direct mail) guarantees I never
run into any of those problems you mention here.

I don't worry anymore about dropping sales because I
don't focus on getting one-off sales. I use lists.

I don't worry about losing traffic because between my
own online lists and the lists out there in direct mail, I
control how much traffic I want to drive to any product
    I want.

So...yea, I've been through a lot of that when I was
focused on just making money...but building a business,
strangely enough, makes me more money than when I
was focused on "making money" with one-hit-wonders.
