Question about your customers browser

Listening to folks here talk about optimizing web pages for one browser or another, I've just gotten into the mindset that "everyone" uses Firefox.

Today, I was reviewing my stats and was shocked to see that almost 88% of my respondents were using IE in one form or another. I've only been vaguely paying attention to site accessibility (it's a membership site) and solving the occasional problem I get from an IE user, thinking they were random events. Seems I have to re-focus my efforts and start paying more attention to how Bill's world works.

So, I'm wondering, how many folks here actually pay any attention to whether their site is optimized for all browsers, and that if they have a dynamic website, that the scripts work well under all browsers?

Have you gotten complacent and forgotten "the other side?"

Personally, I prefer Firefox. That said, I preview my site projects with both IE and Firefox. A couple of subtle differences in the way the different browsers view my site, for example an audio file that play automatically when the home page loads does so with Firefox, but IE can only do it if ActiveX controls are permitted.

    It's almost "frightening", isn't it?!

I don't think it's a problem, when you design a website or landing pages, just test them on FF, IE and Chrome, make sure all looks good and you have no problem

I test for IE & FF. Other are such small amounts that I don't bother.

There are already some people who had issues with their website not working or loading on specific browsers. It’s better to be cautious by checking its compatibility and avoid losing revenue in the process.

We find that different markets have variable percentages of browser users. For example, many artists use Safari, many IMers use FF, etc.

We always check out a site in the main browsers after we are finished and are sometimes surprised at the differences we find.

Always check out your buttons and your forms in the various browsers. Recently, we had a button where only one-half of it was clickable...but that was only occurring in FF.

Another common issue is code in forms not lining up right in one browser, but being perfectly aligned in the other...a small thing...but it could make a difference on your image and in conversions.

You need to make sure its really IE reporting this too Kirt, some older versions of browsers actually reported they were IE when they were not - and automated bots will sometimes report the same thing.

If possible you should target standard html so as to minimize browser problems. unfortunately all browsers are not strictly 100% standards compliant.

I suggest you test only against a few browsers - you can't please everyone - and going by your own stats is a great start. Also if you do not have access to the browser there are several online sites that will test your pages and send you screen shots of what it looks like in the selected browser.

Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots is an example.
