Word Press Help ASAP!!!

I just installed a new theme for a new site im building BUT at the moment I do not want it to go live. In fact a under construction page or something like that is what I need.

Does wordpress have a feature likes this at the same time giving me the ability to modify the template and add post?

Just dont want poss visitors to come to the site as they see me adding small things here and there

there is a maintenance plugin you can install that will take care of that. You can still see the site as it would be when you are logged in as administrator.

The maintenance plugin, as Leslie mentioned, is great. But the downside to using it is that your site is showing as down while it's enabled. This is okay if your site is new, but if it's an established site getting good traffic, you will lose that traffic while the plugin is enabled.

For me, I just make the tweaks or changes with the site live so that my traffic can still get to the site. In the past I did use the plugin.

    Hope this helps...

I also make the changes when the site is live, but I know some people who don't like to do that, so the plugin does come in handy sometimes.

Oh I forgot to mention that the CJ Coming Soon plugin does come with a launch date countdown feature, and it allows your visitors to subscribe to your list which is a bonus for list builders.

You can also install WordPress locally with XAMPP (or MAMP if you're on Mac). I found it very helpful when installing my new theme so no one could see the horrible mess I made until it was fixed.

I make the changes with it live as well, just try and get them done as quickly as possible. It is only when I have something major that takes time that I worry about an under construction page etc. The other option is to temp redirect your domain to a separate page that holds the "under construction" look

Freeware Sever2Go works as a local host, or on a cd or stick mem. I intend to use it to work on several WP projects at the same time, before going live...

I believe a coming soon page instead of maintenance page would be better for your situation. CJ Coming Soon is the plugin that I've used before my blog went live. It has nice templates and the ability to build custom templates, as well as basic SEO features.

Search for "CJ Coming Soon" from the WordPress plugins if that's what you want.

Another option is to create a Page with a 'coming soon' or 'under construction' phrase or image and make that your 'front page' in the WP settings.

You can then work on it live in the background. When complete, move the normal home page back to the front.

***Depending on your theme and other settings, you may not want to try this as your menu items would link to the back pages unless you can easily hide them as well. (Not sure how WP savvy you are).

***This may not be the best option, as some of the previous suggestions are great, but this is just another option to consider.

We normally "park" the WP site under construction at a test location either on a separate domain or in a sub-folder until we are ready to go live.

Then it is a simple matter of moving the files over and changing a couple of lines in the database.
