Making $73,000,000 From Google Traffic, Adsense & The Longtail...

When it comes to getting a lot of traffic from Google there is a lot to learn from the authority content farms out there like Mahalo, eHow.com and About.com

eHow.com (from Demand Media) is one such company that is particularly spectacular and you can learn a lot from. I apply in some form what they do in my own business (although I'd like to think with a more human touch and niche quality focus).

Essentially eHow.com is

- heavily monetized by Adsense
- uses an algorithm to pick high paying keywords that presumably have lower competition
- has a system for turning those keywords into article headlines
- outsources content creation for those headlines at very low rates (they produce about 4000 videos and articles daily).

That's why they get millions of visitors a month.

The average site can learn from what Demand Media does and apply it to their own business, even in small niches.

Lots of content and targeting the longtail brings A LOT of traffic, and it can be outsourced and mostly automated.

I remember seeing a video about how they create the content. Interesting, especially how much of it is still manual, not automated.

I personally don't understand the obsession with automated content. It spits out garbage or copied content and it can't be sustainable as it typically involves gaming another site such as Google.

I know some smart people have been able to make some very good money with it, but when you can systemize a process for creating unique content written by real people that has real value I see little reason to focus on automated content.

I agree Chris. I hate automated content. I know a lot of people want that "easy" method of making money where they just click a button and sit back waiting, but I think those websites stick out like a sore thumb and provide no real value to a visitor.

Good points. Demand Media has a good business model. I have been building quite a few of my own sites and blogs using IPK strategies. I haven't seen massive results yet. I know it takes time. I have yet to find the over night marketing method.

I found an overnight marketing method.

Buy every shiny new offer every day and implement none.

Livestrong and Demandstudios also regularly advertise for writers on craigslist so they also get lots of traffic that way as well.

    Chris,

Great post. It's exactly what I'm doing and am seeing fantastic results!

I think even for those just starting out who might not have the $ to outsource, you can start by writing your own content and then re-invest your profits later on.

The keyword research part of this is the key, I've found you can defininely group your keywords together so it doesn't have to be just one keyphrase per page, but 10 or even more per page. You get a lot more mileage out of one piece of content that way, especially when you don't have massive amounts of money to spend like Demand Media does.

    All the best...

Keyword research is key no matter how you look at it. This is almost always why the noobs tend to fail in every aspect of affiliate marketing or online marketing for that matter. They simply think ok if I optimize for a keyword like better health or what not they will automatically be placed on the front page. This is by far from the truth. If they would have just done some research first they would have been able to go for a keyword like better health after 70 and got far better results. Now I just used those as examples. I have no idea as to if they are even competitive nor do I know how much traffic they could get. I just shot them off at the top of my head.

So bottom line everyone who thinks that im is impossible. Have you ever thought about what you are doing wrong. I guarantee that you are not doing the proper keyword research to find those golden nuggets of keywords. The keywords that would get you off that non profit im roller coaster. So I beg you noobs please do proper keyword research first. It would save us all alot of headaches from trying to help you when you wont even do the very first step every single marketer needs to take too succeed.

Yep. Keyword Research is about identifying low hanging fruit - essentially areas overlooked by competitors that your audience need answers for.

Most new to the industry just look at traffic and target keywords that are out of their reach.

Or they target keywords that are not profitable.

Or they produce crap content that doesn't convert.

There's a lot to bring to the mix and all areas need attention from promotion, market research, conversion, content quality and more.

I just took 2 paragraphs off of (one of those mentioned sites). Found over 30 other places that were word for word, those same two paragraphs and the rest of the (one of those mentioned sites) article as well. Not one of those 30 sites gave credit to any other site, (one of those mentioned sites) claimed it as an original article, it had the most recent date on it. All 30 site's articles went on longer than (one of those mentioned sites) article and their articles were much more in depth than the (one of those mentioned sites) article.

It would seem, one could make a good living just copy/pasting portions of articles one found around the web. (I am assuming that plagiarizing was not the intended lesson. Lol). It did surprise me to discover a well respected site engaging in those kinds of activities though. Nothing on the web seems sacred anymore? The Salty Droid would appear to have his (gun) sites on the wrong group of business people! It is my take that few on this forum (certainly no one that visits regularly) would stoop to those kinds of 'tricks'. Yet an organization endorsed by (the most famous personality I can think of) and other well know celebrities is openly doing things like that. Amazing!!

Disclaimer: Not mentioning the site. Made a blog post today and inadvertently used a brand name as a 'bad idea'. One law suit a day, please.

Still easier to copy the number one page, convert to ASCII and pay $200 for 12,000 one way back-links.
Your defense? You didn't write the page in English, you wrote it in code and it certainly isn't your fault the browser chose to display it differently than you wrote it.

I don't really go out hunting for stuff to read. I get information from a few quality sources, and friends in the industry also clue me in to what's hot to know about.

I spend minimal time keeping myself updated about the industry. 99% of newsletters and email lists I subscribe you go automatically into a folder I rarely look at - only for reference when I want to look something up.

Then there's the 1% (maybe 3-5 sites) that I actually will read the headlines of when they come in, and if it interests me then put them to one side to read when I am ready (such as at lunch time, or the end of the day).

Other times I come across stuff when I am researching a particular topic I need to know more about.

Demand Media is a company that has been put in front of my face countless times. A couple of mentions from friends, mentioned by one of the sites I regularly read and I've come across it at least once when researching topics related to marketing.

I actually write for Demand on occasion and they are rigorous. They are also very picky in terms of how they grade content and research so I agree it's a good business model to look at in terms of content generation and quality.
