Best Software For Video Editing?

Just looking for opinions on software for video editing. I want to edit some video with simple transitions and text so I don't need anything fancy, in fact windows movie maker would suffice however every time I try to run it on my PC it shuts the whole thing down to a blue screen of death so I've ditched that.

I'm looking for some software that doesn't have a huge learning curve as I'm not planning to become a Speilburg or anything like that, just something stable and easy to use.

Cheers,
Terry

Hi Terry, I highly recommend Vegas. It's simple and lets you work very quickly. For example transitions can be done very easily just by dragging the end of one clip over the start of another. Text is quite simple to implement also.

The entry level version Vegas Studio should be enough to get you started. More info here - Sony Creative Software - Vegas Movie Studio 9 - Introduction

If you're going to run a PC and you're looking for something simple, consider getting your computer looked at. You may have a memory issue videos are pretty memory intensive (which means "big") so you may just need to add more RAM.

I'm a Mac guy and I started using iMovie. VERY small learning curve. Easy to learn and powerful enough to give you more options than you'll need in most cases. But you would need a Mac to run it.

If you're going to be doing online or computer screen videos, Camtasia lets you edit in their system.

    Thanks for the replies,

I plan to use my mini dvd cam for recording , then I want to use some software to edit/cut the files and add transitions before using camtasia to upload for viewing on the web.

My pc has 2gb of ram so I think that is enough

On the PC I vote Sony Vegas... I like the platinum version.

There are thousands and thousands of free vegas tutorials online.

Just type into Youtube or any other popular video sharing site "Sony Vegas Tutorial." Every time I've searched I have found a tutorial on exactly what I was trying to learn on vegas in youtube.

    Do the same on google.

Also Sony has some really great basic guide you as you do it tutorials built into the software.

When I was a Windows user, I used Vegas after trying Premiere.

    Vegas rocked!

Then I went Mac, and I have FC Studio and I can't get my head around it at all.

Does anyone know of some good tutorials for FC?

I also tried iMovie 08, and found it extremely frustrating. It appears that to just cut and transition scenes, you have to duplicate the original file, and paste in what you want, IIRC.

Anyway, go with Vegas. No question.

I always recommend Vegas for those starting out because it is the most easy to understand. To be honest, editing with Final Cut Express ($99 for Mac rather than Final Cut Pro) is MUCH easier than IMovie 08. IMovie 06 worked fine and 08 is a very non-user friendly interface. When I show people how to edit with Final Cut (the basics), they get it in minutes..with IMovie, I found it confusing even for the average "Joe The Editor" .

Sony definitely hit a homerun with Vegas for the prosumer market, although I was with Adobe Premiere for over five years (2001-2006) as an editor as part of my living in producing marketing videos.

I like Camtasia...it's pretty easy to use and there is a ton of vid tutorials available. I also like the fact that it can produce multiple extensions.

Sony Vegas if you're on a PC...

Of course Windows Movie Maker (which is free and installed on all Windows computers) is really easy to use and works fine for more small projects that don't require anything advanced.

I bought the Sony Vegas video editor. The premium edition, the expensive one that is supposed to work with HD movies. It works with my Sony camera, but not with my Kodak camera. I got the upgrade over the internet. Still does not work with my Kodak camera.

What is next Sony? An accounting package that does not take dollars, only yen?

Sony are like Apple in this regard... 3rd parties contaminate their products!

Definately Vegas if you are starting out.
Simple to understand, and as Josh mentioned earlier in the thread, you can get pretty much any how to tutorial you can think of on YouTube or other video sites for free.

Also, just to add. Vegas seems (at least older versions were) less resource hungry than, for example, Premiere.

It worked well on my old laptop, which did not have dedicated graphics, and only 1gb ram.

If you intend to use your mini dv camera, these usually output DV format which is pretty high end in comparison to the type of stuff done with Camtasia or ScreenFlow and working with these types of huge files is pretty processor intensive.

If you hope to add real time transitions and various other effects and without even trying to be the next Spielberg you will need some poweful kit and software that will work with DV files. We only use macs and use Final Cut Pro, Shake, Adobe After Effects and other stuff. You can just use iMovie for the really simple cutting and pasting of files to link them together in order to create one video and drop in some off the shelf transitions.

    For the PC try adobe Premier Elements. You can download a free 30 day trial here;

Adobe - Adobe Premiere Elements 7

Definitely, and at just $79 for Vegas Movie Studio it's one of the cheapest pro quality editors you can get.
