I would head over to digital point forums to the buy/sell section of the website; try some of the people out; check their itrader rating; dont pay until the work is done and it's good...

When I paid unfront, they seem to never do anything work!

I heard that you can get someone full time to work for you in the Phillipines for $300 per month is that true?

I've had excellent results! Others who've hired direct have
shared that they have not had such great results. I guess
having lived in the Philippines, speaking the language, and
understanding the culture gives me some advantages.

There are two ways you can hire in the Philippines:

1. Directly individual hiring

Pros:

• It costs cheaper
• No long term contracts
• No setup fees
• You are not required by law to give incentives / extra pay

Cons:

• Hard to find a "gem" staff
• It's time consuming to do the screening yourself
• Your staff can accept other jobs which can compromise their time and dedication to you.
• They work from home (lots of distractions)
• Daily reports can be unreliable since there is no physical supervisor to verify it and watch over their shoulders

2. Hiring from an agency

Pros:

• You get dedicated staff with a supervisor making sure they get the job done.
• They work in a real office environment
• You get replacement if ever the staff is incompetent
• Your staff is pre-screened, trained and is usually a college graduate with a degree

Cons:

• A bit pricey than direct individual hiring because agencies have to pay office space, management staff, etc.
• Some have long term contracts
• Some have setup fees
• Some require you to follow employment laws in the Philippines (like paying 13th month pay)

Price for direct individual hiring can range from $1-$3/hour.
Price for agency hiring can range from $4+/hour

So it all comes to your budget. If you have limited budget but want to start outsourcing then direct individual hiring is your best choice. Be ready to face some "challenges" along the way though. If you have a budget then obviously, going to agencies is the best choice. It's like having a physical office with real staff without the physical management headaches.

For me, to get good results I've found that it is vital that I am absolutely clear about what I want and need. I also think it is very important to treat my team members with respect. I have worked with a few of the same people for over a year now. In that time I have come to know a little about them personally and I think that has helped to build a feeling of a team and a sense of loyalty. I am happy to give bonuses when a job is well done and I give bonuses during the holidays.

I have paid for some work by the hour (according to what is requested by the candidate) and other work has been paid for based on an agreed amount upon completion of a project.

I have also had to let people go. I don't have a problem with this if the work is not being completed. There will always be some people that have stronger work ethics than others - that has to be expected. But I also learned very quickly that if I did not give detailed information about what I wanted, I would not get the desired results. In other words, outsourcing puts you in a managerial position of sorts and you have to be prepared to handle that.

I had 3 Filipinos working for me until last month. 1 was very good, one was average and 1 not so good. 2 FT and 1 PT. I paid them $250 to $300 a month for FT, mainly doing 2 tasks...building auto blogs and reworking public domain books for Amazon Kindle.
As others have noted, pay them by the blog built, by the book edited, etc. Paying them by the hour was a disaster for me. Paying them on production worked great!
I was working a specific project that I ended, but if I needed to outsource, that is where I would go for hiring my employees.
And like Willie, I too took Jonas' course to see how he did it. Felt like it was worth the $99 spent.

Note the comments. I suggest that you begin them with lower rate then when you find the gems, pay them what it says on that chart. Don't start them off high since you aren't sure if they are worth it in the beginning.

I've got 1 full time worker in the Philippines - I've found that for transcription (the original reason I hired her) she does great work, and for other tasks her level is directly related to how well I can express what it is I want her to do.

I had several people working for me from the Philippines. They where very good. I just need them for about six month project and it worked out great. I was paying one $400 per month and the other $300 per month.

One was a web programer and one was an article writer.

My only advice is that if you are outsourcing any content writing I would stick to United States born unless you don't want quality with good grammar and spelling. Just my experience and my two cents.

I think for those type of workers you need to use odesk and only odesk. Reason being you can check their tests, feedback and check how many hours they worked. You can get good work done in the Philippines for cheap, there is allot of competition among themselves.

If you are looking for workers in the Philippines, you might want to check Odesk.com, Onlinejob.ph, and Freelancer.com. These sites present a list of qualified workers who can deliver the task that you requires them to do. The important thing is that you have to look for that "gem" worker that will understand and deliver the tasks similar to what is your standard.
As for the payment or the rate of payment, I would say it depends on the quality and quantity of the article or services that they will deliver to you. And before hiring some people to work for you, might as well give them a test run and then you could screen those who you want to work with.
You will probably find the persons that you are looking for in the Philippines, since they are known to deliver the task to their client satisfactorily.

I had a bad experience using someone from the Philipines, but I don't think it was because she was from the Philipines. I think it was because she didn't know what the heck she was doing... even though she tried to convince me that she did!!! LOL

Don't know about the Philippines but my husband in his previous job (Online Marketing Manager for a big IM business) used to manage some guys from Pakistan and it was a disaster. His company had hired them for peanuts to do SEO - mainly article writing and link-building, but also some occasional content writing for the actual website. They had hired them through a local agency.

The biggest problem (and I don't mean to offend anyone) seems to be the language. In my husband's case, the articles these guys would write would make no sense and added no value whatsoever to whoever read them. They repeated the keywords in every other sentence and that was it. They were also very poorly written. Same with the website content and my husband would then have to spend additional time re-writing it in proper English. A big wast of time and resources for his employer!

If your website/project is targeting English-speaking countries (and presumably it does) then you want the language in it to be nothing less than perfect, or your visitors will instantly know a non-native speaker wrote the content and guess what - they won't think your website/project is any serious and they will leave.
If you are serious about your website/project, you may want to consider this.
I'm not saying that all non-native speakers speak bad English, but it seems to be a very common problem with workers from underdeveloped countries.

Another reoccuring problem my husband had was the very poor infrastructure in Pakistan where their workers were based. They constantly had to deal with power outages, interrupted or weak Internet connection etc. Often times he would be talking to them on MSN about work-related tasks and the connection would suddenly "die" and he wouldn't be able to get back in touch with them for hours (usually due to a power outage or a bad Internet connection on their end). It could very well be the same in the Philippines, especially if your workers were based in some province.
If you have to deal with problems like that on a weekly basis and spend hours trying to fix stupid issues that keep you away from your business, I don't know how much it's worth outsourcing to cheap laborers from overseas. Yes, it will save you a lot of money but it will give you many headaches in return!

If you want cheap solutions, I'd look into having local interns, or one or two hourly-paid local people who would work for you part-time and who would be doing this for an additional income (e.g. a stay-at-home mom, a retired person who'd be looking for a few hours of work, a student looking for some pocket-money and some work experience etc).

I employ 5 filipinos as computer operators. It runs 24/7. Until i started paying considerably more than the oft quoted $300, i could not keep staff. I hired by face to face interviews. Everyone gets the same rate and the incentive scheme is also shared equally. I imported a Chinese supervisor, in whom I have complete trust, who is also a programmer and general computer whiz, increased the wages and now i have a stable, well trained workforce. It took time to find the right employees, and low wages proved to be a big part of the problem. There are also the little things like transport at night, which i solved, quite easily, for a few well invested dollars a day and enforcing punctuality. I am so confident I am planning on spending three months sailing around the Pacific, going weeks internet free. Good workers are out there, finding them is hard. they say pay peanuts, you get monkeys

The more expertise a VA has the more salary they should command, the "you get what you pay for rule" applies anywhere in the world.

Even paying a highly talented VA from the Philippines is still going to be a huge saving for you compared with hiring locally.

If you're looking for people on the low side of the expected pay rate then be prepared to do some serious training to get them up to the standard you're looking for.

But watch out because they could leave for higher pay with their new and improved skill levels. It's just human nature.

Honestly, there is a significant difference in quality between an outsourced writer from the Philippines and a native speaking English writer.

While there is more upfront cost with native speaking English writers, I have found that their writing provides the best long term results, and greater overall revenue.

I used to work for a video game company and we outsourced some of our support staff to the Philippines. I would definitely recommend it if you have the resources available.

1. They are fairly cheap depending on the skill of work required.
2. Professional mentality, most Filipinos go to college straight out of high school so they are educated and professional in the work place.
3. Very friendly and polite demeanor.
