What'd be greater or better than Facebook?

Hello Warriors,

I was thinking which service or social network would take on Facebook and make it look like what's left of Myspace today. Facebook is a great tool but there is too much NOISE over there. I mean I dont want to know how your mother scolded you over a phone.

So what do you think? What would be better than Facebook in future?

Thanks,
#facebook #greater #whatd

Facebook hAs 500 million users. They will reach for sure 1billion in no time and surpass google. I wouldn't worry about who is going to replace facebook but how to get traffic of those 500 million plus users.

I have no idea, but I'll bet there are people sitting in quiet little rooms at Google and Microsoft trying to figure out the answer to that question.

I always get intrigued by the comment about Facebook surpassing Google. For what?

I could not find a technical article to fix Windows 7 on Facebook to save my life, maybe I could, but why? I do not plan to search Facebook to find out how to fix a WordPress blog.

They are completely different animals with completely different purposes. They do have some cross overs, but in most respects I use Facebook for fun, Google for information.

Microsoft are pursuing a slightly different avenue. They don't mind not being number one, just so long as the other players have to sweat to stay ahead of them.

Because sooner or later, the other players get tired...

Every single successful Microsoft product started out as an also-ran, and people laughed at it. But today, the market leaders in each niche are the also-rans - because all Microsoft had to do was wait for them to screw up, and be there when it happened.

No Microsoft product succeeded because it was so great, but because the competition inexplicably decided to blow goats.

The problem many marketers have is they want to turn a
mule into an ostrich. Two completely different animals that
    serve different purposes.

You may not want to know about someone's mother scolding
them but that's what Facebook is for... SOCIAL networking...
    not marketing.

People do not come to Facebook to hear our latest pitch
on how to get rich doing SEO, building lists or doing webinars.
They come to interact socially with a group of selected friends
who do want to hear about their mother scolding them... lol

I get that every marketer has a tendency to salivate over all
those registered users but I think we all learned long ago that
traffic volume isn't nearly as important to our success as what
that traffic is looking for when they log in.

I agree with all you write, but
      does Facebook?

      They've created some pretty

      exceptional tools for marketers
      to pitch to target audiences.

I agree. I see no actual comparison since basically, Facebook is just another website found when you searched Google or any search engines for that matter.

I looked online about their premise in claiming that Facebook already surpassed Google. Basically, most people would log on Facebook instead of searching Google for anything. Although many people visit Google, Facebook traffic is higher. Aside from this, they also consider the amount of time they would spend on the site. Most people would stay longer on social networking sites instead of others. Hence, more chances of promoting the site or their products.

    Guys,

I know Facebook and Google are different from each other. My question was what would surpass Facebook? even with their 500 million user base? I know Google and others are thinking about it.. but I personally think that an unknown guy would do something that would make people leave facebook.... I am asking about a social network that would be better than Facebook!!!!

Any social network is going to have people making mundane comments. The only way around it is to have a panel of editors that must review and approve each comment before it gets published on the site. And then you don't really have a social network anymore, but something more along the lines of a magazine or traditional website.

To be better than Facebook and attract people, you need something compelling to bring them in and keep them coming back. Facebook has Farmville. I swear, Facebook would probably lose 80% of their members if Farmville ever went away. LOL.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

        Diaspora

Facebook is over the privacy setting issue but it is still a big problem for them.
Google buzz died before it even started because of this.

Diaspora is positioned itself as the Privacy aware social network and it could be big who knows, but there have been many social networks and all of them grow very quick then disappear. In the UK a site called freindsreunited became huge then was gone in no time. It was so big it was on the news every day at one stage!

So bigger than facebook yes probably sooner than we can imagine but facebook is still peaking in users but not page views per person.

        All interesting stuff

Find out what people hate about FB and you might be on your way to an answer. It's impossible to predict but it does seem that social networking sites have a limited life. Maybe FB will be the one that lasts. Who knows.

Some big sites just get so big that there's no replacing them. They are just behemoths. And as the dance goes on, they eat way too much cake. And half way through the dance they are so fat that they are not only unrecognizable, but they've also forgotten the partner that brought them to the dance. For example, Ebay - She's now the fat prom queen that has lost her date. She'll still dance, and people will dance with her. But she'll never look as good as she did at the beginning of the dance - with her original partner.

I noticed last week that Facebook now has a PR rank of 10 - the first site I've ever seen apart from Google that scored a 10. Anyone know of any others?

It already exists, actually ... well, kind of. It's still years away from practical use because it's difficult to get everyone on the same page. It's called "FOAF" (Friend of a Friend), and it's part of the Semantic Web Project.

Essentially, it's a decentralized Facebook. ... i.e. You don't have to go to one site, like Facebook, to get the benefits of Facebook. Wherever you are, you're already there.

This is the only type of thing that will ULTIMATELY be a Facebook killer (or whatever comes after Facebook). The true power resides in the hands of the people. Until they (the people) decide to claim that power, you'll just have a series of MySpaces and Facebooks, etc.
