Newbies: Are you stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated???
If you're fairly new to Internet marketing, making your first dollar or first hundred or thousand dollars can sometime seem impossible. You read about the big guys making tens-of-thousands of dollars a month and their sales pages hypnotize you into believing anyone can do that if they buy their program.
It's not that easy. It is very, very unlikely that any one product will make you rich. It takes work to make money online. A lot of that work involves getting an education. That might involve buying a few programs, but if you are dedicated you can learn most of what you need to know by just doing free research online.
You have to pay your dues in Internet marketing. But those dues don't have to be paid in cash. They can be paid in time and hard work and doing research on your own.
Find the big guru types in your niche and watch what they do. Watch how they do it. You won't make the big time overnight. You can't learn everything all at once. And another thing: If you're into buying books from the IM superstars look more at what the big guys do than what they say. Follow a handful of big-timers and see how the do their email marketing, look at the types of products they promote and how they promote them. Learn from that.
I also want to mention free stuff. I've bought a lot of stuff through the years--some of it very good and some of it utter garbage. But some of the very best material I've picked up has been free. Let me preface this by saying I have no connection with any of these people--I'm not promoting their products in any way. Having said that...
Probably a year or so ago I was doing some research into list building. Of course I Googled up "list building" and the #1 site that came up was one by Tellman Knudsen. I was impressed so I visited his blog and read a lot of his material.
He offered a free 30+ page book about list building and email marketing that he and Shawn Casey put together. You know the gig--you give up your name and email and you can download the book. It was called "The Great Extinction". I probably read it five times that night. And to be honest, I could sum up the entire contents in one short sentence. (I choose not to, however.) But that one tiny ebook was filled with some real gems--one in particular. And I thought to myself, these guys not only have written about this topic, they actually do what they write about. I know they do because I am on their lists. That makes me sit up and pay attention to what they say.
A month or so ago I opted into a list of Anik Singal. In exchange for my name and email I got his 158 page "Empire Formula" ebook. I would have to say that over the past three years this product (which is free) is without a doubt the very best thing I've run across. Again, after reading this thing, I said to myself, he's not only writing about this stuff--he actually does it! Again, that makes me pay attention.
There are tons of free things out there if you take the time to find them. Some are gold, like the two I mentioned.
One other tip--it's something I do myself. I look for people who have had a hugely successful first product launch. I might buy their product, but what I am more interested is what they were doing and what they were trying to learn before they launched their product. What?
Sure, suppose a person launches a product and it is their first huge success. Let's suppose they did this in May of 2009. I would go to forums they frequented and see if they posted questions. What were they trying to learn in the months preceding their launch. Don't glance over this. This can be a huge learning experience. Often you can learn the kinds of things they were trying to learn before they launched their product--often while they were still working on it.
This can give you clues as to the missing pieces they were trying to put together as they were developing their product. Those missing pieces may well be the same missing pieces you are looking for right now.
More than that. You can go to YouTube or eZineArticles and see what they were writing about or making videos about before they make the leap into superstar status. This can be revealing too!
One thing you can do is to pick a very specific aspect of marketing products online and make yourself an expert by actually doing it and getting good, no--getting very, very good at it and they creating a product based upon your expertise. There are zillions of topics you could learn about in any niche. Here are just a few to think about.

No one knows everything about everything. But one can learn a lot about one specific thing. Make yourself an expert at one particular thing and then monitize that knowledge by creating products showing others how to master the topic as well.
This isn't the magnum opus on successful online marketing. It's just a collection of some ideas. When you start out it's easy to get overwhelmed by everything. Take baby steps, but take steps that lead to learning some important skills that will help you down the road to building your empire.
Hope that helps. Don't think it will hurt . --Mike
