Looking for Advice on Publishing an Ebook!

What is the best method?

I can Publish through

Amazon (create space)

Barnes and Noble (pub it)

Or Make a PDF

With amazon and barnes and noble, they take a chunk but....they will also have a market

If I just make an ebook pdf I can keep all the revenue but will not have the marketing power/reach

I also not sure about e-readers (kindle/nook/sonyreader)

Please give me any advice!

Listing an item on Amazon is not a guaranteed path to sales. You'd probably be just as better off selling it on your own.

    Hi Thomas,

The best part about publishing a paper-back with either Barnes & Noble or Amazon, is the credibility it gives you within your niche. People respect a paper-back book from a published writer, far more than they do an ebook. To the public, "He wrote a book!" has nothing to do with ebooks.

Don't forget you can get an Amazon widget for your website, and promote it just the same as you would an ebook. You can even write in the back a list of discount codes and URLs where they can enter them, and this lets you add on a back end/up-sell.

As to the ready made market, in my experience you will still need to do the vast majority of the selling yourself, but at least you do have a platform that your potential readers trust. However, once you start generating sales, the publishers will start promoting your work. They just like to see some initial sales before they really start backing you.

Just thought I would add that most of the ebook readers don't show PDFs. They usually use there own formats, and most are not color. The iPad does show PDFs but make sure you use an 18 point font if you want it to be readable.

    Cheers,
    Colin Palfrey

I agree with Colin. Ebook carries with it a connotation that has been cheapened by too many second rate products. Anyone can slap together a few pages of regurgitated content and market it as an ebook. But if you want at least the appearance of quality and you want to have a solid base upon which to rest your reputation, a paperback published by Amazon (Barnes & Noble, too, although I'm somewhat doubtful about their publishing platform) will advance that cause.

I have one book that is almost finished and two more in the pipeline, and I intend to publish them all through Amazon and promote them through my own website.

And that's my $.05 worth (inflation has lowered the value of $.02).

I write the product, outsource the cover graphics, build the sales funnel on my own domain, create some upsells, and then market to affiliates...

...which might not increase my credibility with the general public, but I'm not marketing to the general public, so...

...you should know your audience before you pay $500 for a POD like create space.

On the contrary, I think more eye-balls will be on it if its on Clickbank.

Clickbank is another great way forward, but you are then looking for affiliates. Its a different type of marketing, as you want to concentrate on building a good launch, and gathering affiliates. It just depends on which path you think best fits you.

Why would you pay $500 to Createspace?

I think you are confusing them with the self-publishing companies of old, where you had to order hundreds of books to justify the printing plate costs.

You only need to pay for the P&P of your proof copy. There is an expanded distribution channel that you can pay $50 ('ish) for if you want, but nothing for $500

Once again, Colin is correct. It is not necessary to pay $500 to Create Space. I would strongly urge you to visit the Create Space site and browse the members' forum. Lots of good tips, lots of good information.

Going the ebook route is really a stepping stone to test the waters

I don't think I can do a true paper book? I would love to but I thought I would start with a small ebook.

Not mention the niche is website/blog so Im hoping the buyers will be Tech savvy!

About the whole format thing Colin refers to....I found a site called smashwords that puts the book in various formats (kindle, ipad, nook) so that is pretty cool!

Clickbank is pretty flooded with ebooks. I see a lot that show up on there and seem to never make a single sale. There especially seem to be a lot of ebooks about blogs out there.

Does your ebook offer some unique information that you are sure cannot be found elsewhere? I thought I had a killer idea for an ebook that would sell great - about local blogging. You may be able to tell from my sig that I'm now giving that ebook away for free, lol. It really is a great ebook, but after I finished it, I realized there are just too many competing products. I was also told that my idea isn't exactly new or anything, but that my information and plan are actually really good.

If you are curious, take a look at my book and tell me how it compares to yours. If you think it's better than mine, go ahead with your plans. If mine is better, I urge you to reconsider before you dump money into anything, lol.

Well thanks for all the info everyone!

Could I the ebook for smashmouth

and also sell it through clickbank in pdf format?

The best of both worlds? Or would I need to make them each unique?

I think you've found the answer yourself - why take an either/or attitue - when it costs very little to do both except for some time in formatting?

Later, if you wanted to offer the ebook as a bonus - you can give proof positive of its value by pointing to its sales page on Amazon(or where ever you place it).

As for the number of eyeballs - that is, and always has been, the job of the author! get out there and market it! Click bank and e-Junkie can both help build a horde of affiliates to help you - but don't forget to help them with marketing materials etc. (banners, articles, example blog posts etc).

      Good luck!
