Trying to find my "niche"

Finding the Warrior Forum has definitely been a gold mine for me! So, let me start by saying thank you all for all the wonderful knowledge that is provided here! Who knew that this world actually still kept a community of people willing to help anyone and everyone. That fact alone will keep me trekking along towards my goals.

With that said, I am trying to find my niche in the marketing world. As of now, I am in college working on a bachelor degree in accounting and working full-time. However, life presented this opportunity to me, and I would be a fool not to jump on something that has captured my curiosity, thoughts, and attention at such a high rate. So, finding my niche in this market is where I stand as of now; I love to write! I am hoping to start a blog very soon, but need my hamster wheel to turn a little faster as of what I am going to begin with, where this journey is going to lead me!

My question for all of you is at what moment did you "know" or did you just know by means of research etc. I have signed up to a couple blogs and began reading to learn different styles. That has helped extremely! However, I am just curious as to the experiences of other fellow warrior members. I have read that some found mentors...how did you find them? So much curiosity that I have, and I appreciate all that you can help feed that

Thank you all again!
Kira

I picked the make money online niche because it fell in good with my passion about small business. I felt that by teaching people how to make money online I am also teaching people how to start and run their own business.

So my suggestion is follow your heart and promote the niche that you enjoy. It will make things much easier when it comes to writing blog posts.

"Follow your heart" - great advice!! My thoughts have pondered and will keep pondering that concept. What is great about your niche is that you found something that you love and in addition, you are helping people at the same time; that is what I hope to find, which is how this business will become a life-long success versus a short-term one.

      Thanks again!

OMG! I am currently in the same shoe as petersk57 too and thanks to you smplylvn, I now know what my niche is! I've been buying "how to" courses related to making money online and I find a few of the latest ones that I purchased to be completely useless where some that were free are actually more useful! I think i've learned so many ways of online marketing that there are some tactics that I might have even forgotten...is that a bad thing? well, I know once I get going things will start popping up like spam windows! haha.

Once again, Thank you to petersk57 for starting this thread and thank you to smplylvn for helping me realize what I should be focusing on.

As far as picking a niche, it really should be something that your interested in. Cause in the end who wants to do something they don't even have an interest for.....lol. I would definetly do some research in finding what niches are hot and what are not. Then narrow down the rest of your options and stick with it. Even when you think it isn't going to work. 9 out of 10 people start something and either get frustrated and just give up, or just plain out aren't taught the right kind of system to help them find success. We too are in the Affiliate Marketing/Making Money Online niche. It seems to be a profitable one and many people are interested in learning about it. When we first started, our neighbor, Liz Tomey, was and still is an internet marketer. Who now has made a name for herself in the the internet marketing field and is branded as the Biz Model Guru. You can Google her and find her stuff. She has a lot of good information that you can use to show you all the ropes to virtually anything when it comes to internet marketing.

Another thing you might be interested in doing, if you don't know already, is going to Elance.com or Guru.com and sign up to be a freelancer. People come on there wanting articles, reports, and other content to be wrote and they pay you for it. My brother is an Assistant Editor at his college on the college newspaper (MTSU). He makes a lot of money on Guru.com and Elance.com and he loves it. If it weren't for them he'd be broke with all those college expenses.... lol. Just thought we'd give you some advice since you like writing articles.

Hope all this was some help to you!

    To Your Success!

Thank you, Brian and Shannon! I will definitely look into your advice. Especially Elance.com and guru.com. Actually, I am on elance.com already, but (oh my), I have not recently thought about that freelancing opportunities since I have been sitting idle for so long. Thank you for bringing that up!

      Best wishes!

Don't let high competition scare you away from a niche that you are interested in, either. Just narrow your focus on a subniche at first. Dating is an extremely competitive niche, but a dating site for divorced singles (just pulling something out here, I haven't actually researched this subniche) might be doable.

Less competition isn't the only reason to choose a subniche. It will also help you focus your energy so you don't make the classic IM mistake of trying to do too much at once. And, in my experience, your readers will be more loyal.

Best way to find a niche in my personal opinion is doing research within your passions. Example; I love pitbulls. Say I really love red nose pitbulls. Now I research to see what kind of information is available for "red nose pitbulls". What kind of products are there in the market place? Is there a manual on "how to care for red nose pitbulls"? Is there a blog dedicated for red nose pitbulls?

Also do some keyword research with google's sandbox. Google will give you a very good idea about what search terms people are using to find information. You will also learn what kind of competition you will have.

The beautiful thing is that you can always find a "niche" within a "niche". Example; "Yoga" is a niche. "Yoga for pregnant women" is another niche. "Yoga for busy mothers" is another niche.. And so on!

    Hope this helps!

Don't fall for the BIGGEST MISTAKE that so many new people make when they are deciding what to enter for a business.

They hear over and over again to find a niche that you are interested in and something you can fall in love with.

Good advice? Yes....BUT....it's only half of the story.

      Here's the real key:

Make sure that your niche can be monetized. Make sure that people searching for what you are writing about are willing to buy. The worst thing you can do is to spend 3-6 months setting up your business, developing your blog, and driving traffic, only to realize that people interested in XYZ...are not really buyers.

Go where your heart is...yes...but only keep going if there's also money there.

I agree with you. I am still pretty new to monetizing fully digital products and I am just now in my research phase. I have an idea that there is substantial need for and search traffic is strong, but it is the kind of topic that most searchers would expect to get free information about. I have plans of offering a mixed bag of free and paid content, but before I invest the time and energy into developing these products (ebook, podcast, possibly a forum) how can I tell if the market is willing to pay for quality content?

        Thanks. (sorry to hijack)

          Hey Kira,

First of all let me congratulate you on realizing that you should only get into one niche market at a time. Breaking into the internet business is so much easier following a passion of yours. I always read about how marketers try to cover a bunch of markets at once. That is fine but it takes a lot of work for it to produce results.

I would suggest not starting off in the make money online niche unless you actually have been there and done that although some marketers have done that before.

Also I agree with what Scoaster said that you should not care about competition when it is your passion you are going for. Building content and backlinks flows smoothly in this situation so you will overcome the competition eventually you just need patience.

I personally broke in through the gaming market and succeeded. I really do not know what advice to give you on what niche to start in accept that you probably know what you like. Hopefully it is not too hard to make profits from. But to try and help you out let me make a list of all the markets that I am sure there is money to be made.
          • Playing an Instrument
          • Golf
          • Speaking a Foreign Language
          • Gaming
          • Electronics
          • Accounting (since this is your major)
          • Losing Weight
          • Building Muscle
          • Dating
This is just a short list but I hope this helped a bit.

I have to agree with Joel. Eben Pagan (well known successful online entrepreneur) said that there are only 3 markets worth pursuing if you want to earn a living from it. Health, Wealth and Relationships. Find your niche in one of those areas.

GREAT question! SO many niches warrant attention...I started with one that is a trend, the other, I discovered while watching a video on another totally unrelated product; which developed into my current (not yet released) product.

Choosing your niche depends primarily on two things. It’s either you’ll choose it according to your interest or the highest paying niche today. But if you’ll ask me, I’ll choose the one within my interest so I’ll not get tired of working on it.

    Choose a niche that:

    • that you won't tire of working on, hour after hour, day after day
    • that at a certain point you can say it's finished and move on to the next without the urge to constantly tweak it - when it works, proclaim it done
