Anyone use cartoons, comics to boost sales?

I've been perusing the Warrior Forums and saw nothing about graphics, illustrations.

I'm a professional cartoonist/illustrator which is why I'm asking.

In the past I've used a sequential cartoon to explain a product and they've always worked astoundingly. I should have done more. I will be doing more now that I've found these forums.

Animation is a great learning tool and so are cartoons. People love them especially when they're well done and most importantly they sell the product and service.

So I'm asking if you all ever use them for selling or see a need for them.

Thanks.

If I wanted you to do ten images for me...

    - Seven forum avatars
    - One logo around the same size as the logo in the top left of this forum
    - One larger logo for use as a header image
    - One "sovereign" logo for use as the focal point on a page

What would you charge, what would I get in the way of deliverables, and what rights would I have?

Whyncha PM him your contact info? Instead of taking up Main Forum space with two private parties negotiating a service transaction, and also derailing the thread.

Primarily because I figured this is the same question everyone else has, and this way he only has to answer it once.

I have a betting site, and I use a fair amount of graphics/cartoons, mostly soccer balls or simplified images of players. I think they work out great

You won't believe it but you look like a friend of mine who is a popular comics writer. Goes to conventions signing autographs and such.

Anyhow I'm pretty much booked up for art chores but since this is a website that totally has my interest I would trade a project like that off by knocking alot off the price for exchange for tips, software etc.. Rights would belong to the purchaser. Toons are good for sites as well as merchandise like t-shirts, bags, posters etc.. Don't sell your sites short though. A brand like a toon can catch on and turn into something lucrative if the surfers find it as an image to promote themselves. So for an assignment like that I would charge $150. Turn around would be a day at most. PSD files though. Large PSD files so you could produce posters, t-shirts etc..

What skills do you have or software, tips, programs that are nifty?

Lots of 40+ guys who still go to cons look like me. That's actually a good way to recognise us, when you're new in the area and want to know which cons don't suck.

How much additional for AI files with the illustrations created as vector art?

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Oh forgot that toons are great for ebooks too. I've got an children's book or two in ebook format that I'm prepping for sale and one for promotion I'm giving away free. These ebooks are cool because you can embed flash video, audio etc.. One of my pals owns a huge ebook company. I mean huge. Sells novels, comics, graphic novels etc.. Educational books too which is a major plus side. Working fast now with a couple of comics/animation schools to produce works. Learning marketing on Warrior Forum will enable me to test techniques here as you can embed hyperlinks to products and services in the ebooks. Combinations are endless. Believe you me, a free ebook spreads fast and the upsells grow from the testing I've seen so far. Once I master more marketing techniques and buy up some of the software and programs promoted here on Warrior, I'll unleash more content like comics and children's books and other works. No use in making stuff if you don't market it right!

Hey Cdarklock, if you're near Seattle you have to meet my pal Hubba. He's a great artist that does fantasy work, tattoos, pinstriping and is even building a replica of that robot from the old tv show "Lost in Space". He's doing a video or pictorial of all his steps to probably market if he can. Trying to get him to do an ebook with vids.

See that's the kicker. I've got thousands of artists and writers I know. Animators too. They have 0 marketing skills but their works have generated billions of dollars for decades. I tried to tell them to jump on the web wayyyyy back in the day but it fell on deaf ears. Now with the economy going down the toilet they're looking for more ways to generate capital. If they produced as much content for themselves for marketers to sell on line you'ld all be rich believe me.

I'm about an hour south of it, but I make it to Sakuracon and Emerald City Comicon on a sporadic basis. Wil Wheaton and I have this ongoing argument over whether vehicle Voltron is better than lion Voltron. (I'm on the vehicle Voltron side.) One of these years I'm going to make PAX, but I always seem to just miss it.

You sound like what Malcolm Gladwell calls a "maven." You make the connections. If you can make contact with a bunch of people in the IM world, too, you can match up the right creatives with the right marketers - and make an absolute killing acting as the middleman on the introduction.

It always works! Toons and good graphics cement your site and service in a surfer's mind. Don't use clip art as there are a gillion sites with the same imagery and it causes confusion. I'll be checking out your services in your sig too!

I think a lot of people that try to build a nice landing page know that the text is namely for google and the images or headlines are for sales.

A good call-to-action button on a website can make a difference for a good conversion. So maybe you can offer this service in the future, make customized call-to-action buttons with nice and happy illustrations!

I can see that. I wouldn't do clip art stuff though. It can get so generic that the surfer won't retain the image that brands your particular site or sites. It would have to be on a one on one basis.

You're right about the landing page. It's what can make or break you. Following pages to the upsell are just as vital but the landing page is like that old saying that first impressions last.

Thanks! I'll set up a page on one of my comics sites. Also rates for copywriting which I do alot of nowadays. People need those fresh, well written articles for their blogs and every year I keep making more money at it and I started just as a fluke but it's turned into quite a business. Having grown up in publishing those skills come in handy.

Well I know you're doing awesome at IM!

My head is spinning from all the possibilities. Content products to sell we have in abundance. I've got thousands of the top cartoonist, animators who have no clue how to market even though their works produce billions a year for the major companies.

Can you imagine a swarm of excellently done illustrated and animated ebooks covering every topic from tutorials in all fields and just downright entertainment?

People love tutorials. It gives them that extra edge to keep the wolves off the door. Why pay for a $5,000 course on breaking into the voice over industry when you can get an ebook for $10 loaded with video and audio and links to the right resources? Of course people will buy them by the ton. How about illustrated and animated ebooks on handling credit, debt, mortgages and other life saving issues? Heck yeah! The possibilities are endless and so affordable it's ridiculous.

I've got a radio show starting next week that covers the paranormal and I work with the big paranormal radio and websites in the world but those folks don't know how to market as well as they should. Talking about content? The popularity of the paranormal is at an all time high and these researchers and authors have content through the wazoo they haven't packaged for IM. Especially the spiritual niche. They have millions of fans but are using the old skool techniques that just bring them in a pittance compared to what you seasoned IMers can do.

I know the top nutritionists, weight loss, breakthrough researchers in alternative energy and medicine.

I would not have the time to cover all those niches but can help them prep their works easily. Making it easier for IMers to look the products over, estimate their overhead and profit margins and just rock and roll.

I have to get Jack Humphreys courses asap.

Not to hijack the thread, but a little marketing note here, this is one of the things that Corey Rudl taught way back when.

We all know that taking your IM knowledge "offline" is big right now but you can also use your IM knowledge to help people like those quoted above.

Go find these authors, Internet radio hosts, churches, non-profits, software developers...and approach them with a j.v.

Matt Maiden, good advice and I can do that. I speak to these people on a daily basis. As I mentioned I grew up in major publishing and news and still have those contacts. Believe it or not I know the majority of top authors.

When the web started to gain steam the artists and authors and publishers laughed at me saying the web was a fad. Now they're losing their homes and retirement funds. Just take a look at the newspaper industry. FUBAR. Yet those reporters and editors could have been making untold fortunes had they moved onto the web when I said to. Same with animation and comics. Both industries got decimated until they finally moved onto the web but that took their corporate marketers and mom and pop stores to get their products out there.

What I'm doing is compounding my services. Provide content to have marketed and provide services to marketers who might need writing or art. Keep the overhead low so the returns are maxed. So far I've been doing very well over the years. I've had my ups and downs but right now if I make an additional $5k in pocket money a year I can take the year off and just produce. That's why I'm going to study here on Warrior because there must be numerous ways to make good pocket money if not more with smart work and the abilities I already have.

I'll be going full bore by the end of this coming week as I'll have extra money to invest in courses and products advertised here. I think one or two should get me kick started and then just keep plugging away each month. Build up that passive residual income and gives me more time to produce some products to prop the niches out there. Just doing a six or seven page comic to promote a niche and embed it with ads from affiliate programs should do enough. With comics you can plant graphics ads like if I have a cartoon character wearing a t-shirt I can put a sponsor's logo on it. I tell the reader to click on the secret hidden graphics and it becomes like a game which launches the browser and that to the landing page of the sponsor and hopefully the upsell. I can change these graphics at any time too.

I might just do a generic niche comic wherein marketers can drop their own links and graphics into the art. Maybe do a subscription service.

Right now I just need to hookup with the right IMers who have their A Game on and I'll be alright. I'm a cheap date for jobs but I do that because the exchange is the knowledge you gain.

First things first. Before you buy anything else, join the War Room. I'm guessing you already know why I'm telling you this...

Okay so I spent some time perusing through Clickbank to see some of the landing pages people use to sell their products. I must say that they're about as exciting and as interesting as cereal getting soggy. They have to snazz those pages up. Not just some long scrolling, filled with testimonials, bizarre discount offers, and then the sign up page. If you're going to sell me something at least show me you care enough about the layout and direction. Now I see where I can come in handy. Provide the kind of design and catchy art that makes the surfer stay, buy, and then forward to others. This is going to be fun.
      Whoa! Time out.

It's easy to fall into the trap of believing a certain skill set once taken into a new market will set the world on fire and be a big game changer. This is where more people fall flat on their face than you can imagine.

Many of those soggy cereal sales pages have gone through a tremendous amount of market testing to get their conversion rates up to where they are making bank.

There is actually a science behind a lot of what you are dismissing as subpar. There's the old saying "You don't know what you don't know", and it certainly applies here. NOW would be a good time to lay your biases aside and pay attention to how this game is played. In other words, keep your eyes and your mind open. This rabbit hole is deeper than you're giving it credit for. It may be fun to reinvent the wheel, but it may not be as profitable or as easy as you are making it out to be.

That's not to say that merging your talents and visions along with a strong desire to do it your way won't work. I'm only suggesting that you add a level of understanding about why what you are currently seeing in the marketplace is there to begin with.

And for the record...I'm a fan of using cartoons as a sales tool.

      ~Bill

WSO = Warrior Special Offer. A subset of the main forum, this is where you market special deals to other Warriors. The rule there is, it must be a BETTER deal for Warriors than anybody else in order to be there...or a unique Warrior-only type of offer. There's a set of rules that is sticky'd at the top to let you know what's fair and what gets shot down 'cause it's not allowed.

War Room = What you want to pay to join in order to be able to post a WSO. It's a one-off fee, and it's WELL worth the money. Lots of specials inside the War Room that people give away that they charge money for elsewhere. If you join, you won't be sorry. And once you join, I think you can send PMs right away.

ahlexis, oh! I was already offering deals. Are we allowed to offer deals outside of the War Room?

I'll be joining up at the War Room later this week once I finish up the schedule I have here. I might offer 3 toons for $50 each just as a peace offering from a newbie. I do them for clients and also friends and family. People use them for making their own t-shirts and stuff. Usually through Cafe Press. I've got some I'm doing for other nonprofits as it is. I don't charge the nonprofits as I can write them off.

There's so much on Warrior I need to study up on so bear with me. I'm going through a nightmare of a work week putting out fires but should be done by this week. If it's okay to offer a toon deal outside of the War Room I can do that this weekend/early week.

Lots of people just don't realize how far a toon or logo can go. Normally doing corporate logos cost ridiculous money but small business people can't afford them.

Yes, you can offer deals outside the War Room. There are lots of good deals elsewhere, it's just that there are some fantastic free deals INSIDE. Also, lots of knowledge in there as well.

Joining the War Room gives you additional privileges on the rest of the board faster plus gets you access to additional knowledge. But in order to offer a deal in the WSO area you have to be a War Room member. I think you can post deals in the "Warrior Products and Services" area without being a War Room member, but I'm not sure. Posting in each area has its differences and pluses and so forth. Also, if you have a website that's got your own offers on it, you can promote those in your sig file as well...as long as it's YOUR offer and not an affiliate offer.

P.S. Welcome to the Warrior Forum!

Re-familiarizing myself with Clickbank is more pleasurable. Looks like they've come a long way since the old days.

Bill Farham, those words are well said! Yes I'm very aware that some things may well be left as is and re-inventing the wheel may not get the wagon anywhere but that's why we do test marketing. The stats don't lie so once step is tested I'll be able to see what works and what doesn't.

I've done enough over the years as it is to know using toons works especially if they do the right amount of storytelling. Believe it or not the storytelling skill is rare even today and a glance at many toons, movies, books, etc. will tell validate it. It's a lonnnnng story but that's my specialty.

And yes I'll be in the War Room soon. Just had to put out the last fires from the past several months of companies not getting their administrative gear in order.
