What happens after list building?

Disclaimer: I'm very green in IM so please bare with me.

I have observed a ton of emphasis on list building. As far as I can tell, this is almost exclusively used for affiliate marketing. You're trying to sell a product on your page, but failing that, you still try to gather e-mail addresses on a "squeeze" page. Then you use that list of e-mails to send out newsletters and continue pushing the product. Have I got that right so far?

Assuming that I have, I am curious how the numbers work out afterward. With pages built for Adsense, for example, we have metrics available to us to predict how people behave and consequently how much you earn (given X amount of traffic). Is there any comparable stat for lists? Can you estimate what % of subscribers will buy product in a given niche, similar to CTR stats for Adsense models? I understand that this may vary a lot depending on how good you are with the newsletters, but how about a ballpark range? Is this a stupid question?

    It is not easy to estimate the conversion rate, for the following reason.

    1. Your members may not like any correspondance you are sending them
    2. They may opt out if you annoy them in the slightest
    3. They may not like your offer
    4. It is dependant on individual people

    All of these reasons create a barrior, although, if you have already sold something to them and offer something in the same niche i.e. and upgrade, you may have up to a 50% success rate.

    My rate currently stands between 10%-25% dependant on my offer. Do not spam your list, send them tons of valuable and free information, but make sure some information you send costs, otherwise you will end up with a freebie loving list.

    Not at all. It's used for other things, too. It may be that the affiliates are the ones you've seen discussing it most often here, though. (I'm one of them). There are also many affiliates (or at least people trying, usually temporarily, to be affiliates) who don't ever build a list at all.

    Again, not quite. If you use a "squeeze page" then you're not trying to sell the product on it.

    A squeeze page is a type of landing page (page on which visitors "land", having clicked a link) that contains only an incentivized opt-in.

    The system you describe above is actually what I do on 8 of my 9 niche websites: I have reviews of the product, links to copious other content, and an incentivized opt-in on the page. That isn't a squeeze page: it's just a landing-page with an opt-in.

    This last sentence was right, yes.

    I don't think it's a stupid question at all.

    But I think it's a question without any meaningful/helpful answers (though doubtless others will try to offer them), because it depends not only on how good you are with the newsletters, as you suggest, but on a whole host of other things too, such as who the people are, what took them to your site in the first place (this is hugely significant), what the incentive was for which they opted in and how it related to who they are and what they were looking for at the time, whether or not it's a one-product niche for you, and several other questions, too.

    In other words, it isn't just phenomenally difficult to "estimate", but the chances of anyone else's figures being applicable to you, to your situation and to your business are almost infinitessimally small.

      I disgree with you. I have seen folks with list but have never made a dime online. Why?

      There are two kinds of list for the purpose of this post: List of Hungry customers and List of hand-out seekers.

      Hungry list is always looking for what to feed on but hand-out seekers are always looking for free stuffs.

      Go figure.
