You should check out the ExitRescue Plugin. It's free but I use it on self hosted WP installs, I'm not sure about the restrictions for WP.org installs...

Is it me or does anyone else hate those things. If I want to exit, please, let me exit. Throwing a pop up in my face does not convince me to purchase anything. In fact, it will have the opposite effect and I'd probably never return.

        But maybe that's just me.

          Hi Mike

I know what you mean.. The thing is, all the information I have on my blog is FREE, the way I really make anything is if they sign up to my list, so I have to try to stop that valuable traffic escaping somehow..

I do agree with the pop up thing though.. I hate pop ups myself whilst im cruising the site but I don't mind too much if i'm going. Everyone has a different opinion though.

There's definitely a good and a bad way to use ExitPops. It makes me cringe when I see the $10 off on the ExitPop because it exudes desperation. But I use them to offer a report for free with an optin, which I find much less irritating...

I hate them. I don't use them. I bitch and complain about them all through the chapter of my sales funnel product where I'm telling people how to use them.

But people say they convert. And hey, maybe they do; I haven't tested them, and I'm not going to.

I have never purchased on one either... But it could be argued that neither you or I are the typical consumer...

I agree, we have "trained" ourselves not to look at offers as ordinary consumers.

I agree. There are many negative effects to having this installed. It's not going to have anyone turn around and buy your product but it will ensure that those who might have come back never will. Also Google will penalize you for it in their rankings.

I would stay away from them altogether. I can not think of one occasion where I changed my mind about purchasing, joining, donating, etc. due to an exit popup. Just my opinion, but they cast a negative feeling over the entire site and make it very unlikely that I will return.

I especially dislike the popups that try to be tricky on the discription of the "Ok" and "Cancel" buttons.

I have used them and they covert well for me on my niches sites. Thing is, everyone in IM niche knows about them and typically hates them.

But in the non IM niches, people want solution to their problems and something they may not be able to afford $39 but they could sacrifice $29.

That's just my opinion though and other people may have different opinions.

I've got to agree they are annoying as hell if you're trying to leave a site that either doesn't float your boat, or you just can't afford the product, only to go through 5 or 6 exit pops and find out the product they wanted you to buy for $197 "can now be yours for this ridiculous, I'm slitting my own throat, and putting my kids out on the street price of just $7"

How can you trust anyone that was going to stiff you for the additional $190 if you'd bought first time round!

However, (sorry for the mini rant there) my reason for wanting to use one is purely to offer the potential customer a choice at a separate product, if the first wasn't to their liking.

Which (eventually) brings me to my question, does anyone know of a free or cheap script I could use is said customer was to leave my squeeze page (so no wordpress plugins please), to offer them something else?

                Any help always appreciated

As much as the proverbial "WE" hate pop-ups, if the message is strong and opt-in easy, can still be effective Overall. Do what you can to build list without being "obnoxious" lol. I'm sure it"ll work with the right wording
