My sites won't load properly?

For some reason about 3 weeks ago my sites started not to load fully (missing images etc) so I thought it must be a host problem and talked to them who in turned told me it was a ISP problem so I just finished 30mins on the phone with them with no resolution.

Problem is if I viewed my sites using a online proxy they loaded quickly and properly but from my PC they took in excess of 30 seconds and still had missing images. I can't even ftp my sites anymore because they take so long to load via cuteftp and basically just hang.

I've come to the conclusion that I've altered something on my PC that isn't letting me access my sites because if I jump on my laptop and surf to my sites using the wireless connection they load just fine.

I don't know what I might have done to cause this though.....any ideas?

    Wow. That must be irritating. Have you installed any firewalls or virus protection software?

      I don't think so (may have updated, can't remember) but even though I think they would have totally blocked the site if it were a firewall/virus issue?

    It definitely sounds like it's your isp. Your isp is throttling perhaps or slowing down, whatever. Chances are they wouldn't tell you that anyway.

      That's what I thought but if I use my laptop to access the same sites which is on the same ISP account only wireless, they load just fine.


      I have no doubt i've stuffed something up down the line somewhere..........

    Try emptying your cached files and temporary internet files then reload the page.

      Doesn't make any difference as the same problem applies to my ftp program as well. I can ftp easily from my laptop so I've screwed something on my main PC somewhere

    Hmm o.k. open up your system restore and run it from a date you know all worked. it is possible an update has screwed it up
    Or it may be a virus

      If I can't find a solution then I may have to do a system restore. Pretty sure it's not a virus as I have scanned the PC for nasties and it come up clean.

      Knowing me, it's just a tick in a box that I put there when it's not supposed to be there!'

        A system restore does not have to wipe your computer out. It can restore it to an earlier state when everything was working.

        Anyhow here is a lesson in virology:p
        A virus if allowed by you to come onto the computer i.e. administrator access is given for a program to run then that virus -befriends your antuvirus. your antivirus will not show it as a virus because it was told not to.

        As Gary says it is probably a type of spyware I remember way back registry booster used to use an avert that would show up on your computer and tell you there was viruses and errors galore. truth is that was a virus containing many components of spyware which literally hijacked the browser.

        So here is what you can do restart your computer in safe mode.
        run a shell extension scan with your antivirus-the only option it will have.

        Then open your spyware removal that Gary directed you to and do the same thing. Because no windows resource and directory files are opened-they are locked in safe mode. the potential for your antivirus/antispyware finding something increases greatly

    Your hostfiles could be causing an issue or yes your firewall or antivirus could be blocking some images.

    Also, double check that the paths to images aren't local paths (ex: c:/...) and are relative (ex: images/...)

    If your laptop is working fine on the same connection as your desktop, then it's not your ISP.

    If your desktop has problems with web browsing AND with your FTP program, it's NOT a web browser issue like temporary files, etc. (although clearing those DOES fix a lot of problems). Since your FTP program has issues, it's not temp files.

    You said you were clear of viruses - this type of behavior is (in my experience) related to spyware - it's a category of "bug" that's like a virus but usually just irritates the heck out of you vs a traditional virus that deletes stuff.

    Check out this free (for home use) program - it's well respected.

    Malwarebytes

    Get the free version, install it, update it and run a complete (full) scan on your computer.

      Thanks Gary,

      I already have Nod32 Security Suite and Malwarebytes running and have scanned with both of them, that's why I thought it wasn't a virus/spyware problem.

      I just decided to download another ftp program (filezilla) to try it and it runs fine without any problems, which again confuses me, it just seems to affect browsers (FF,Chrome,IE) and cuteftp.

    Did the scans in safe mode and still no luck.....I'm sure I'll figure it out one day....at least I can use filezilla and upload some sites now and get back to work.....last thing I need is an excuse not to do work!!
