Tell me about it. When I saw an e-mail like that this morning, I decided to quit my IM business and go look for a job.

Doesn't that make it more of a dingy-gray list? I mean what self-respecting blacklist just lets you resubscribe?

I think it seems like a poor choice of wording, to be honest. It's like saying, "We got the message and you're on our list of people to not email. But what do we really call this list? We don't know, so we'll call it the 'blacklist.'"

Yeah, it may just be poor wording. It sounds as if they want to assure you that you won't "accidentally" be sent any more emails. ... They did offer to take you back right away -- without even really knowing you, I would guess . ... We hate you: We love you: We hate you: We love you: We hate you: We love you ... Jump on wherever you like.

Boy, there are some tolerant types around here. "Blacklist" for most is an emotionally loaded word, and some won't make the connection that the only list they're being barred from is the one they unsubscribed. What they really want is a fear-based reaction of quickly re-subscribing and never thinking about leaving again.

I'd be tempted to reply with "Hey, that's a great idea. I blacklisted your domain, too. Thanks!"

I know it's supposed to be funny, but the pragmatist in me just sees the term "blacklist" as the opposite of "whitelist" in this context. This would be even more true if the newsletter was in an IM niche.

They also were "smart" enough to explain what the meant by blacklist.

I'm not trying to be a party blanket here, just adding my two cents.

    Catherine,

That's very likely just an example of horrible wording, probably created by the tech person for that marketer. (Probably. Some mailers do seem to use phrasing like that to create second thoughts. Or just as their way of taking a slap at people who choose to unsubscribe.)

The most likely reason for the practice is that they have multiple lists and have to have a master suppression list to ensure they don't keep mailing people who've asked to be removed from one list.

    It's a kludge.
