Bing and Facebook partnership, Google dropped out of social data pie?

While I am writing this, Facebook and Bing are announcing the partnership. This is the great step forward for Microsoft and Facebook, but great step back for Google. This is going to change the way we as people are communicating with the machines. Gathering of social data or social data mining is the main preoccupation of large IT companies. The way this data is harvested is directly impacting the internet marketing.

Backlinks are going to become obsolete in the days to come. Social interactions revolving around your Facebook profile will now become more and more important to internet marketers. Ways companies are data mining are getting richer and richer, while we loose our privacy, we are gaining certain things, that might help us out in many different ways.

This is by far one of the most important announcements this year, so it had to find it's way into the newsfeed of Social Media Consultant, and actually a starting post for this website.

We are witnessing today the major change in the internet landscape. I am looking forward in checking out the competition on the internet, regarding search engines and social networking websites.

Fight barely started, stay tuned, so you know all about what's gonna be happening in the battle for your attention!

"Backlinks are going to become obsolete in the days to come."

According to whom? Last I read, Bing and Yahoo still rank far behind Google's dominance, and as like most, I build my site's backlinking structures according to the best way to get noticed by google.

If I get ranked by bing/yahoo..that's just icing on the cake.

Personally, I've never known Google to buy anything from me.

Just using the google analogy as a gateway for those who use it to find what they're looking for. As a serious question, do you find most of your traffic originating from Yahoo/Bing search results or Google?

I find most of my traffic originating from forums and mailing lists.

I lean towards a slight indifference to the news.

Not everyone uses or likes FB (no pun intended).

Not everyone uses FB the same way.

Some buying decisions are not likely to be influenced by social peers.

By putting all your eggs in this 1 basket, in the hopes that it will be the only basket you'll ever need, you're probably going to do your business a great marketing disservice.

Some months ago I mentioned that this was coming in several threads here at the WF, and I still feel the same about it. This is not going to have a big short-term impact, but there is long-term potential for a shift in the perception of how search results should be ranked, and as marketers we need to keep an eye on it.

It seems it's getting to the stage now where there are too many "You gotta change everything cuz Google/Facebook/Amazon/eBay are gonna do XYZ".

How about focusing on what's happening now?

All the talk on the SEO forums this week is about Google TV and how everybody's going to have to optimise their site by not having more than 7 words per line. Sheesh!!

WHEN Google TV takes off, and IF I want to target that audience I might do something. I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist just because somebody thinks Facebook is going to be bigger than Google or Bruce Springsteen.

I think their partnership will not affect Google at all because it’s still the dominating search engine today. Aside from this, Facebook and Google are not related at all. Hence, they can access Facebook and then search on Google if they want to. Unless, Microsoft will make a way to lock Facebook within the Yahoo networks, which I totally doubt.
