Lots of searches for a keyword... but are people buying online?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of doing keyword research for setting some product affiliate sites. One question I have is: even though a keyword may get lots of searches, how can I know that people actually buy that item online?

For example, I've found a couple of niche clothing terms that have high searches. But I'm not sure people actually buy those clothing items online.

Jan Roos' ebook suggests looking on amazon, and making sure the product has at least 5+ reviews. Are there any other methods that establish high online sales volume?

If it's a specific product, then certainly check out sites such as Amazon, eBay or Google Shopping. If the product is getting a lot of mentions, that's an indication of sales potential.

If you want to get some idea of a keyword's commercial viability, you could plug it into this online tool:

Check and see if there are paid ads(adwords) on the keywords... If there are lots of stores paying to display for the keyword then you can bet they are making sales.

Okay, that is very helpful, thank you guys.

Another quick question: If google shows "shopping results" above the fold for my keywords, is that bad? I'd think it would mean that people would click directly to those shopping results, rather than going to my affiliate site.

If you used Market Samurai it would tell you an estimated "commercial value" behind the keyword, by looking at data on Google Adwords. Basically you would want keywords that have commercial value, which is basically ones that people are bidding on in the PPC world.
