What are the top skills an IMer needs to have?

I was just listening to a very interesting seminar by Brian Tracy online and he asked an important question. He said to figure out the top 4 or 5 key skills that you need to have in your industry (IM) and which one is your weakest skill. He says that your weakest key skill is what sets your income.

So, what do you all think are the top 4 or 5 KEY skills we must have as an IMer? What's your weakest?

I would say the key skills we must have are time management, creativity, courage, organization....

    My list would be this:

    1. Selling (copywriting)
    2. Joint Ventures
    3. Outsourcing <- my weakest of the 5, I tend to think I do better on my own ;P
    4. Driving traffic
    5. Generating ideas

I think it depends what business model you follow.

For my business model I would say identifying the right keywords is one of the most important skills to have but for product creators It's probably identifying a hungry niche that will spend money on a solution to their problem then copywriting etc.

Persistance, dedication, commitment, PATIENCE . . . lol

For real though, I think it depends on biz model but I think all the generic ones have been listed.

You nailed it right there! Persistence, commitment and Patience is VITAL! Especially persistence because when you try so many things and they all fail it's hard to keep trying especially if you are like me and failed for 3 years straight. It's a tough gig for sure.

      Cheers

I sort of disagree. Patient is good, but not too much. I think an obscene amount will result in laziness.

And why hasn't anyone mentioned any technical skills? It is true that you could outsource a lot, but on some level you need basic knowledge.

Copywriting I think was a good one as well.

    1. Action
    2. Persistence
    3. Copywriting
    4. Technical Knowledge (my worst)
    5. How to Outsource

I second Coby and list Persistence as #1.

Copywriting and branding are important but your skills won't develop in these departments unless you stick with it.

Not skills - but "what it takes"

Be someone who takes Massive Action
If the words "give up" are in your brain... you are not an IMer
Commit to doing one thing every day that is related to generating income.
Commit to hours and hours and hours of time devoted to building a business.
Find a mentor - once I had my very own mentor my business went from hobby to income.

    Skills (My Top Five)

    1.)Learned to produce video products
2.)Learned to use Public Domain content in a variety of money making ways.
3.)Learned to keep excellent records of where my income comes from. This helps me repeat success and ditch the rest.
4.)Learned to use Dreamweaver for .html sales letters. (This is a skill I have a love/hate relationship with. .html code is not my friend)
5.) Learned how to publish physical books that sell on Amazon.

Lot's of others - but these are the 5 that are the most important to me. All the other stuff you can learn pretty much for free.

One of the most important skills is responsiveness, especially in two areas:

You have to be responsive to your customer base in terms of their suggestions as well as their constructive crticisms. This will enable you to enhance your products and services as well as generate new profit centers.

You also have to respond to changing market conditions and be able to shift your plans around emerging opportunities when existing ones start to dissipate. This will enable you to smooth out volatility in your sales and keep them on an upward trend.

My favorite one is flexibility - learning to adapt to new situations as soon as they happen rather than sitting and waiting for the "perfect" idea to come along.

I also list communication, being a "know it all", and a writing freak as my other skills, lol. I also have a lot of time for learning - I plan to be doing that on my death bed

Lisa - yes I am procrastinating but I will get to work in a minute!

Persistence and a sound marketing strategy. You have to believe that what you are doing is going to work in the long term even when things aren't going well in your business. You need a sound marketing strategy that will bring in tons of traffic also.

I would say at least an basic understanding of SEO and keyword research.

      Traffic generation.

      Branding.

Learning to provide value first long before the sales pitch which in essence would be patience.

But more important than the how is the why <<<MINDSET>>>

We've had this conversation a number of times over the years, and many suggestions given are personal traits and not skills.

Skills can be taught and learned...

For marketing, there is only one essential skill, and that's getting traffic, aka getting people to see an offer.

This can be as simple as doing a JV with someone with a list that already has traffic, it can be through SEO or PPC, linking, submitting articles, etc.

But ask the old-time boardwalk "barkers" and they'll tell you the first thing you need to do is gather a crowd, any salesmanship comes after. And online, if you use affiliate programs, you don't need to know a lick of copywriting.

The skill to get lots of traffic will over-come many weaknesses in other areas. But if you can't get traffic, none of those other skills matter.

Well at the end of the day, no matter what business you're in, you're really in the marketing business and I think that's where a lot of people fall short. So I'd examine how you're marketing yourself, your brand, your company, products etc and improve that before anything else.

That of course is a rather umbrella term that would include your copywriting skills, traffic gen, branding etc.
