Hey everyone. I want to ask if anyone here has ever or is currently doing web hosting reselling to make money online. If so is it profitable or worth it? Or is the market too saturated and do people tend to just stick with the traditionals like hostgator, godaddy, etc rather than trying someone new?

I was reading about this online and it is interesting but I would like to know more and get some feedback if you could. Thank you and I really appreciate it

I know a guy that does it for a living, in a local area. What he does is he has a reseller account with hostgator or someone (not sure what company, really) and he supplies hosting for local businesses where he lives. He's been doing it for a long time, really, and employs his son-in-law, a friend of mine, as well.

So, yes, you can certainly do it. You might be looking to do it web-based but a good idea is to take it offline and approach local businesses with your local hosting plan supplying local customer service, etc.

Depends on which angle you take it, up to you. But it's doable.

I used to do this MANY years ago (ran a large webhosting firm called VibeHost). Long story short the company basically lost all the clients due to "Unlimited" hosts popping up, offering false promises of unlimited space, bandwidth, etc for pennies on the dollar.

Because of that reason I would never recommend ever going into the hosting biz, especially after being in it for about 8 years.

On the other hand, if you wanted to resell hosting locally, that's a little different. A lot of local businesses are paying $50-$100/mo on hosting, and if you could scoop up 20-30 of them and charge them $30/mo, that's a nice little passive revenue stream. However with hosting it's a tough sell, because a lot of people do not want to switch just because of the "work" involved, even if it saves them a few bucks. For that reason you would have to get creative with your offers, like maybe offering a "free account move", or something similar.

I currently run a web hosting company. If I were you I would definitely stay away from offering web hosting solutions to ebay clients. I did that to get going. A lot of work for little pay. But I Do have several good local clients now. If you try and compete on a national level with these big dawgs you probably should have some very deep pockets and a super great seo guy. I now focus 100% of my efforts on local clients.

The trick is to provide value added services or products that the bigger companies cannot venture into. For example, webmastering and design services for customers who are not very knowledgeable with the technical side of running a website. Even if you charge a higher price (due to the add-on services) than all those "unlimited" hosts, you will still have a loyal customer base because you'll be providing them with something they won't get somewhere else. Been doing this since 2002 so I know it works.

I am a current reseller. I do well because I help people personally on their level, happen to be a huge geek and somewhat knowledgeable about marketing as well. Being a helpful dork is my "niche" so to speak, but I have had a few organic customers just click through and buy out of the blue. Very competitive, pretty rough, but (like any online sale) satisfying when you get a client, and always fun if that's what you're passion is The appeal is the residual income. Discouraging when you first start out, definitely harder than focusing on a CB or Amzn niche
