If you discover a secret SEO advantage, such as....

A high PR forum that allows signature links instantly
or
A website where any user can contribute a blog entry that gets fed to Google News
or
Any technique that gets you high PR links with little/no work

But.... you know that your find, if exploited by the masses will become a door slammed in your face. That the website owner will notice the dramatic increase in traffic and change their policy. Do you....

- Run a WSO revealing the technique and sell as many copies as possible anyway
- Run a high-priced, limited sales WSO selling this technique to a few and swearing them to secrecy
- Keep the secret technique to yourself, so that it can be your hidden advantage in IM
- Tell only your closest friends

I voted 'keep it to myself' only because I have close friends that I don't trust to keep a secret or overuse the resource themselves.

It's the same with a fisherman's best hot spots. If you demonstrate you can be discrete and not abuse the knowledge, you might get a tip now and then. But most pros would almost rather you date their teenage daughters than show you their secret 'book of numbers'...

You missed an option - Tell people without trying to squeeze them for money.

It really bugs me that people seem to think that if they have something useful to say - they should run a WSO and charge people to hear it.

This forum never used to be like this and I think it's very sad that this sort of mentality has become normal here.

I wish people would share those without having to charge like Andy said but i completely understand why they do not. Sucks the search engines are not more transparent with us.

    Howdy

Here is my take on this question.

#1 To me would be like stealing because you know it will not be workable if you sell many copies.

#2 Do you really think this would work "swearing them to secrecy" More than likely it would end up as a low cost WSO with as many copies as possible being sold...See option #1

#3 This seems like the only viable option, to be sure to protect your advantage. Unless you had a friend(s)/Customer(s) that were 110% trustworthy, and were willing to put your money/income in their trust.

#4 How long are you going to be friends, are they going through some financial problems where a quick WSO might get them out of a jam...
See #2. Are you willing to put your money/income in their trust.

If it would truly destroy the technique by letting others know, I would keep it to myself.

I actually discovered something like this myself in the last couple of months. I made an ebook about it and I just give it away for free.

The only reason I do this is because I don't think my technique will become overused to the point where it won't work for me anymore. It's a locally based technique, so if someone else uses it, it will only affect me if they live where I do. I also already have a decent hold on my local market, so I don't even worry about that.
