Regular Product Launch vs. Membership Site

This is a question to those who have launched their own products & membership sites.
On your experience (speaking in generalities here), which is easier to do (easier as in people are more willing to part with their cash for a great product).
1) Typical product launch for a total of $197
OR
2) Get & keep them for a year + at a membership site at $17/month

The total would be about the same (197 vs. 204). What other things should I think about when considering which route to go (more hands on for longer with the membership site is obviously one).

The content would be virtually the same (there is enough to drip for a long period).

    Both would be difficult.

    To sell a product for $197 right now, you have to have a great relationship with your list and some credibility. If you've done it before, you might can. But if this is your first product, that might be a stretch.

    You could certainly launch a membership site and sell it for $17 a month. But in my experience only a small number of people would stick around for a year. On average I have found that most people stick for 4 months.

    I would go with the membership site for sure. and maybe increase the monthly membership fee to $27 if you have high quality content.

    I pretty much will own this market and have a great relationship with my market, but no one has tested the waters with a product, so not sure how $197 would do, will consider the $27 as well, especially if members don't stay very long on average (I've heard other sites do avg of 3 month per member, although that is most likely in the IM niche).

    How has drip feeding content worked for keeping members a long period? Basically what is a good balance for keeping them longest while still giving them enough good stuff early?
