$1 Trial Membership - Is an incentive needed at this stage?

I want to offer a $1 trial membership, but I wondered if I need to offer a freebie at this stage.

I was thinking as it is only $1, surely most could afford this, even in these difficult times.

    But why take the risk? If you have something that you can give away that will push the person over the finish line then go for it.

    You have to think about why you are offering the trial as $1 and not free - and therein you should find your answer.

      Exactly right! And in that reply you have indeed answered you own question. Don't provide a freebie. Get buyers on your list - even if they only spend $1 with you. They are much more valuable than freebie seekers.

      My most valuable list offers no bribes and you don't even get invited until you buy something from me <-- think about that - there's a big lesson there.

        There is defiantly a time and place for both. I actually use both in conjunction with each other. I will offer a 1 dollar trial and than use an exit pop with with a free offer.

  • I actually think it is a good idea. A lot of experienced internet marketers who do extremely well, offer a 7 day trial for $7, some even offer a 7 day trial for free.

    Getting people to sign up for a $1 trial isn't really about affordability. It's about getting people to make a commitment for little risk so that when the payments jump to normal level, they have a different decision to make - cancel or stick.

    Following on from this, your incentives to stay, not to mention the content you're offering, need to be on the money so it would seem sensible to pile on the freebies at that point too.

    Like everything else, it's a numbers game so the more incentives you can offer to get people to take the trial, the better.

    In other words, you need to do both.

    If you have an incentive that is relevant to the product then do it, if no then don't spend 1000s getting one.

    In my opinion sure it is a dollar but some people just don't want to go to the trouble of using Paypal or whichever payment method they use. So a freebie may be more incentive to do so.
