Where Do You Buy Your Domains?

Hi,

I'm looking for a domain provider other than GoDaddy, NameCheap and Name.com.

I would like to find a cheap domain provider that provides private Whois domain registration as part of their service.

I've been with one now, but they take too long for my domains to propagate.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What's wrong with namecheap? They give you a year free whois

Op, are you banned from namecheap?
+1 Namecheap is my goto source.

GoDaddy sucks big hairy, you know what ...at least when you have other options. The interface is horrible, and their upselling is outrageous. Just sell me the damn domain already I don't want to spend another $82 per month on useless crap upsell.

affordable plans? The OP asked about buying domains, not hosting.

    Hi,

    Here is my rational:

    - GoDaddy you have to pay more for privacy.
    - 1and1 takes too long for the domain to propagate.
    - Name.com you have to now pay for privacy.
    - Namecheap only gives you privacy for 1 year and then you have to pay for it.

That's why I was wondering if anyone knew of something different than the norm.

    Hi,

I absolutely loved Name.com, but then a lot of customers were extremely upset that they were taking away domain privacy. So a bunch of us said that we would be going some where else ...

Then Caleb Spilchen in the above post, told me about the free WhoIs coupon. Now I did use a coupon in the past with them but it expired. I just tried the one he told me about and I'm updating all my domains with free WhoIs! LOL!!!

That's why you have to just throw ideas around no matter how dumb they may sound, because someone just might have a good one for you!

Thanks everyone and success to all!

I use both 1and1 and namecheap. It depends on if I can find a coupon for one of them or what type of specials they are promoting.

I always paid for privacy at GoDaddy. Then one day I read their terms to find out what privacy actually gave you.

Well, I'm no lawyer, but as far as I could see, it meant that GoDaddy actually owned your domain legally, not you. It meant that any mail that came addressed to you, they shredded, unless it was registered, upon which they'd mail it to you at arbitary, non-standard rates that they got to decide. As to providing a phone number, well, if you have more than a small handfull of sites, buying *one* skype online number with online answering machine (or whatever they call it) was way cheaper, and I can choose to use it (or not) for any other business related calls. I also get free calls to any landline in North America included.

I've seriously been looking into a niche of providing a service that gives better privacy than GoDaddy at a fraction of the cost. It wouldn't be hard.

I use Moniker. 8.99 .com domains when not on sale. 7.49 .net domains etc.

I used to use godaddy until Mike Fulsaime told me that if someone reports you for spam and you don't respond within 24 hours, godaddy takes ownership of your site and puts up a big page calling you a spammer for all your customers to see. Apparently, he lost like 45k on a site in the time it took to fight with godaddy to get it returned to him. In the 6 figure income videos he strongly suggests to avoid godaddy.

Spam complaint doesn't have to be proved, just suggested and the burden of proof is on you.

From what I heard, they'll take your domain if anyone tells them that *any* of your whois information is inaccurate and you don't respond within 24 hours.

$DIETY forbid you misspell your email address and their automated message bounces because of it.

One strategy I refuse to take part in that I've heard people doing, is finding domains they'd like cheap, looking at the whois and if anything looks even minorly incorrect, they backorder the domain and report it to GoDaddy around 11pm the night before a big public holiday / long weekend. That way, if the owner doesn't see the email because it was Christmas day or suchlike, it gets cancelled and the person with the backorder gets it automatically. Not my cup of tea at all...

I rarely buy domains anymore. I use subdomains now with ANY keyword of my choice using a tactic not used by anybody (At least I haven't seen it yet).

I used to use godaddy but I have come to loathe them. Their interface is horrible and I now call them slowdaddy. I moved everything to namecheap. In terms of costs etc, really most services charge more or less the same don't they? There might be a $1 here or there, but this is peanuts and not worth worrying about. As far as I can see the things to focus are not pennies here and there but:

          * propoagation speed
          * ease of use of the interface
          * tech support

For me namecheap scores high on all of those.

Generally I keep hosting and domain registration separate, i.e. different companies, so as to not have a single point of failure. However, I did buy a couple of hosting packages from namecheap just because they were so quick and easy and tech support was so good.

          Just my opinion!

Heres another vote for namecheap...i think they are great...if your domain can not make you an extra $2.88 in an entire year for whoisgaurd then its best you drop that niche/domain/project anyway!!

Warning about 1&1!! I used them several years ago, THEY made a mistake on my account, insisted I pay them a big premium and collection fees to remedy. Then held my other domains ransom. I then paid the fees and they cancelled all my sites demanding hundreds of dollars to reinstate. I was so mad, I just let it all go, losing good names. I could never could get someone the line to help. I hate them more than any other business I've ever dealt with!

    Just a note :

    DON"T GET NETFIRMS

They asked for an image of my credit card (debit actually) of both front and back, and in 2 days. Unfortunately I was away for that 2 days and when I came back, I found my domain gone. Boom. They took it away.

I inquired at their support desk but they say its their 'policy'. Oh, what rubbish.

I just bought one more at globat.com, been good so far. Live Chat customer service and they gave me what I wanted.

But ultimately, I wouldn't mind spending a few more dollars and get them at the top-notch providers : GoDaddy and NameCheap. Upsells they might have, but they're still the industry's best and I never had problems with purchase so far.

What is wrong with the three registrars that you've mentioned above? Do you have something in particular against them that causes you to boycott them completely?
