Correct structure for an authority site

Hey everybody, I am planning to start an export business which has catalog of at least 50-70 products. So Instead of making little site for ever category I want to make a site that sells all of my product.

Keep in mind I want to make it my bread winning site, so no short term thinking, I want to give it an authority site structure like which has

category--> Sub categories --> Products.

So that my site gains authority with time.

Is that the correct structure?

What do you think?

Any tip will be appreciated.

Yes, you want to have a 3 tiered silo structure. Google it and you can see some good videos on it. The key then will be your linking and how you push your PR.

Just make sure you pick you category level keywords carefully as you want these to bring in some big traffic over time.

Thanks kevin for the great tip. Can you please eloborate on 3 tiered silo structure and provide some video links.

Also it would be really helpful if you can show me an example of an authority site following this structure.

Anoop, what you outlined is actually a 4-tier structure.

      Home Page > Category > Sub-category > Product

For 50-75 products, you might want to see if you can knock a tier out of that:

Home Page > Category > Product

This brings your money pages, the ones with products people can buy, one click closer to the home page. It also increases the odds of the search spiders getting your money pages.

A silo structure means keeping like items grouped together.

Say you had wildly different product lines, like

      Hand-crafted Room Dividers
      Lingerie
      Video Games

Each product line would be a category, and all internal linking would be to other pages in the same category. Individual products would link to the category page, and perhaps to other products within the category. The category page would link to the individual products and back to the hom page.

The home page would link to the categories and perhaps to select items you want to boost.

This structure helps search algorithms slot you into a relevant theme. Better theme relevance can lead to better ranking for long-tail searches.

If I'm looking for, say, a carved mahogany room divider and the search database 'sees' your divider category (with all the links related to room dividers) as highly relevant, it will serve your page over one without the thematic structure.

The exact same set of pages about room dividers, which also link out to pages about video games and ladies' undergarments, will be seen as less relavant and thus assigned a lower rank for that search.

And if you look at high ranking ecommerce sites, you will see many examples of this.

This site is a good example.

My Wedding Favors - Unique Wedding Favors - Bridal Shower Favors

Notice the tiers and the siloing of themes. There is also a lot of crosslinking as well. This site ranks for thousands of keywords, you can learn a lot from how it is done.

That's a really nice template, too. I'm wondering if it's commercially available.

Nicely described the full fledged structure of a complete website.
