I just had a big one day sale, and had one of my biggest days ever. Seriously... Since I have more money to reinvest into my business I am looking at picking up a video camera. What is a good camera for light use for web video? On my blog I had a product that I was reviewing so I used my Canon SD600 to make the video, and let's just say it wasn't very professional looking. I don't need a top of the line video camera, but I would like something that looks good and is digital so I can transfer it directly to my PC without any special hardware. So what do my fellow Warriors use? |

Make sure that when shopping for a good video camera, it has 3CCD. This will pass individual signals for Red, Green, and Blue giving you much better quality. Also, make sure is has Firewire for transferring your video to your video editing software and that uses miniDV tapes. Today's consumer cameras saves video to dvds, etc. This is not recommended because you are ending up with a video that's already compressed. So when you bring that video to your editing software, and render it again, you are compressing the video even more. So, it's best to start with uncompressed video. So, I would recommend a camera with miniDV tape and firewire connection. Also it is recommended that this camera has and Ext jack for an external mic. You'll get much better audio quality than that coming from the built in camera's mic.

The big question is, what is your budget? Without knowing that, here's my quick .02: - Stick with HD only. That's the wave of the future. HD podcasting on iTunes, etc. - If you go HD and you intend to do any green screen work, avoid the HDV codec. It is a low-bandwidth codec that does not contain enough color information to pull off high-quality green screen keys. They might look OK on a flash video, but if you upload a full 1080 HD video to iTunes, people will see that it's fake (assuming they are watching on an HD monitor or TV). - Your lighting is just as important, maybe even more important, than your camera. Same goes with sound. I use Cool Lights if you want to look into those. A great source of info (the one I use) is the DVXUser.com forums. Frank |

Does indeed depend on budget...if going for something super super easy to use and fairly inexpensive - like $150 or so - the flip video is perfect and the folks I've recommended to use it love it (they were interested in ease of use as main priority). If you want something you can 'grow into', HD, fairly easy to use - amazing lens quality and picture quality - and have the latest best one for under $1k, I highly recommend the Canon HF10 ($700). I do film documentaries as a passion and this puppy is amazing - you can produce some incredible video with it! Have fun with whichever you decide - video is a blast! Congrats on your amazing sale day!!!! |
