Another Paypal question - about refunds

I do customer support for a company. Part of that, of course, is issuing refunds.

Does anyone know how long it takes for Paypal to put the money back into a person's credit card account after I issue the refund?

I have a customer today who made a duplicate purchase by mistake, and she's all upset because it's on her debit card and she wants the money back RIGHT NOW.

    I don't think PayPal puts it back on their card or in their account. Any refund I've ever had simply goes to my PayPal balance and it's up to me to transfer it.

      Thanks Tina, but that's because you have a Paypal account and probably used it to make payment. If a customer pays by cc, Paypal will return money to it if the refund is made within 60 days. After that, it does have to go to a Paypal balance (which is a pain when you're dealing with people who don't have a clue about Paypal!).

        Ah, did not realize that. Let your customer know that it's not entirely up to PayPal then. I know when I worked retail, we would process a refund and our bank sent them immediately to the CC in question but people would call us screaming all the time because it could take up to 30 days to go back. It depends on how their CC company handles things, too.

    it takes equal time to the time since the purchase was done. if your customer purchased 24 hours ago and he requested a refund today, he will get his money back 24 hours later and so on.

      The payment doesn't clear the debit card immediately - so I'm sure paypal gives it time to clear before issuing a refund.

      It's the same as a bank putting a hold on a check from an unknown bank before you can use the money - making certain the actual payment is completed.

      I would explain to the customer the money will be returned quickly but the entire transfer - payment and refund - must run the normal course of clearing. Her mistake doesn't change how paypal processes transactions.

    It took me a while because they need the other party to verify it as well. If the other party will not take care of his part in issuing refund, Paypal will also not also complete the transaction. Roughly, I got my refund in a span of two weeks.
