There are no BEST wordpress themes, but there are really good ones that have SEO built right into them and have great customization capabilities.
Here are three that I have had good results with personally.
1. thesis
2. flexsqueeze
3. twenty-ten ( comes free with wp )
I would start out with twenty-ten, get your site indexed and ranked on the first page, then you can play around with all the bells and whistles of the others.
thesis is great for people who have some design "know how" or you can buy ready made thesis themes to plug in to thesis.
flexsqueeze makes things easy, however be careful of the SEO aspect, that is why it's prudent to get ranked first because if you blow something up messing with the theme, you know it was because of the theme, then you would simply undo what you did.
