My $100 a day Theory and why it works for me

For a long time I did what most people do...I read and learned about marketing online. I would come up with awesome ideas, but somewhere during the process of brainstorming out those ideas, I either lost momentum or found out that I didn't know something...so I scratched the idea and moved on.

About 3 months ago I said screw it. I consider myself a jack-of-all trades, master of none kind of guy.

I am pretty tech savvy, and much to my chagrin, I can write fairly well(I hate writing!). I know enough about everything to either do it myself, find out how to fill in the blanks, or outsource to others.

So 3 months ago I sat down and made a very simple commitment to myself. Now I have made these in the past, usually on January 1st every year. You know, quit smoking, start to exercise, give up hookers...you know, the normal stuff

But I made this one even easier.

My commitment was one simple sentence:
"If I am going to do anything related to IM today, it will yield me $100 or I wont do it."

What this meant to me was, that if I was going to go online and work on online marketing in ANY capacity, I was going to do it with the understanding that the results of my actions would make me at least $100.

I wrote down a list of all of my resources in one column, and all of my skills in another, side by side. As time has gone on I have added to both, but that has come from experience and continuing education.

Granted, there are days where I might spend 8 hours creating a product, or re-writing plr, but that is necessary, and that product, when launched, will make me more than $100, so I consider it effective use of time.

Some days I do work for others(web design), other days I work in my favorite niche(offline), but I really enjoy creating products and affiliate marketing.

It's always new and interesting, so I find it exciting each and every day. Of course there are days when I do work and it yields me nothing, but for the most part, my $100 a day goal is exceeded, because if its a product, it continues to make profits.

By pulling from my resources and skills, I have been able to do simple things that not only bring me cash, but help hone my marketing skills, which is allowing me to move on to bigger and better projects.

This may not be for you, but it helped me concentrate and really focus in on taking action, instead of just thinking or just learning, both are useless without action. Once you learn that action actually does result in profits, you then get confidence to move up to bigger products.

This is mainly for newer marketers of course, and is really all about learning to take action so that it becomes a habit. This is not a long term strategy for income, because soooo much more can be made when concentrating on a strategy or business plan. But if you are looking to start earning, at least think about it....

Is this still a theory is did you manage to reach your goal of $100 a day, what's the end result now has it made you more productive and profitable?

I reached my goal in under a week. My first two products failed, but the next 2 did well. So it took about 4 days before I saw a return.

The end result now is that I know I can sit down and when I am at the computer...my actions make me money. It's that simple. Granted I tend to work on other, bigger projects now, but it gave me the confidence I needed, plus I still pull in some residual income from some of the things I did. I also know that I can do it anytime I want, which is a huge load of my mind when it comes to $$.

Remember, I use all my assets. I do alot in the offline world, so I tend to grab money there as well. I hit up old customers, do some local cpa stuff, volunteer to speak at seminars(which always brings me clients).

It makes me more productive because it taught me to use my time wisely, as each time I sat down I had a short term goal in mind...and it was attainable. As for "profitable", I went from just earning from my offline business(es) to bringing in up to $1000 a week in cash. Some of it one time income, and some of it long term residual income.

We could analyze this all day, but the whole point here is something that is over stated a ton here, but rarely followed:
      -set an attainable goal
      -take action
      -learn from mistakes
      -take action
      -stop over analyzing
      -and take action.

Wow you made it under a week.. Congrats man

And the plan of action that you have suggested is a pretty solid advice. Nothing beats hard work and action so one needs to stop just planning and start taking action as well..

Thanks. But really, once I cleared my head and focused on something specific, it really wasn't all that hard. To be honest, making the list of resources(assets) and skills was the key. I had heard people tell me that in the past and blew it off. To me, once I had it staring me in the face, it was kind of hard to NOT make money immediately.

The one thing I have yet to take advantage of is WSO's. I think I have run like 3 in the last 3 years, 2 of which were free. It is an asset at my disposal that I have not used.

Keith, very interesting post (even if the "Theory" word in the title almost made me miss it).
I can relate pretty well, I am still making more money from offline (consulting) than online. Clearly I am not focused and it shows in the results.

Look man, this your method looks like a nice WSO! Make it. (unless you already did).

Thats just it if you want to make money onlne you have to stop thinking and start applying. There is no better piece of advice anyone can ever give when it comes to making money onlne. Then get you --- out there and do some work. If you do no work you will never make any money. Stick to one thing at a time for at least 3 months then move to another but always come back to the first thing you did. The one thing I never did which I may start is making a list of things to do on any given day. Although I have done well with out doing so but it would help me be more productive in the long run. Great post by the way

I've been doing this recently and it's been a huge productivity boost for me. I either use a single 3 x 5 card for each day (before I go to bed the night before, I write down everything I need to do) or use teuxdeux.com, which a super simple (and free!) online planner without all the bells and whistles that usually just make life more complicated.

And @Keith, I like how you said in one of your follow-up posts that you (we, everyone) need to stop over analyzing. It's amazing how productive you can be when you just go to work and stop thinking about it so much!

Cool post - enjoyed reading that.

Things have turned around for me since I actually decided what business model to focus on. When you're jumping from product creation, to CPA, to affiliate marketing in the beginning you get no where.

Once you've made a decision you can incrementally build - and as you say ... will this help yield $100 or whatever today.

    If not ... oh well.

Obviously if one can focus in on one biz model, then that would be the route to go. I had other revenue streams, so this model worked for me initially to allow me to start building an income stream from strictly IM avenues.

And now, I am focusing more on one biz model, but the confidence I achieved in such a short time was invaluable. Plus with my marketing A.D.D., it allowed me the flexibility to bounce.

Keith, this is an inspiring thread to say the least!

It's not full of pie-in-the-sky promises or promoting products but just down-to-earth ethical work procedures and protocols. It shows with the right intention, do action, and discipline you and anyone else can make those goals happen.

If you do sell something I'd be first in line to buy it.

    Best.

Thanks for the tip. I love the fact that you have a goal (make $100 a day) and your time on the computer revolves around that goal. it's important to me because sometimes I would be distracted by FB and stuff like that. Need to set a goal and work towards it.

There are so many things to do, and so many things to distract you from staying on course, I actually set up a daily schedule as I am involved in developing a product, Writing an E Book and building a list all at the same time.

I found by allocating a specific time line for each activity throughout the day I find myself progressing at a decent pace without getting overloaded with the mountainous take before me.

        hey Espresso,
All the Marketing method you have mentioned "Article marketing, blog commenting, seo, social networking" drive traffics.

Those plan actions are essentiel to lead generation:
        -set an attainable goal
        -take action
        -learn from mistakes
        -take action
        -stop over analyzing
        -and take action.

I absolutely love your post Keith. Besides being a great read, you revealed something that a lot of folks never get. That is, focus on what makes you money. It's too easy to get caught in the minutae of IM. There are so many small, time sucking tasks that are easy to get caught up in. You figured it out and have done very well for yourself as a result. KUDOS!

I think it's hilarious that "hookers" is a tag for this thread haha.

Keith, I think you hit the nail on the head there with your post. If we're not careful, we can get overly involved in learning and theory, and this gets "lost in translation" on the way to actual action and we either end up doing nothing at all, or doing very little and giving up at the first sign of trouble.

Taking action is so important not only to us making money, but also learning things as well. As an example, we can read all day long about how to set up a squeeze page and drive traffic to it, but you won't actually be able to pick up the finer points on how to implement this unless you actually do it!

In addition to that, we must focus only on the right actions, as you've described above. If you want to make money, make sure that you spend at least 80% of your time and effort on activities that will actually make you money! Sounds simple, but by prioritizing things like that it lessens the likelihood that you'll drift and wander off on a counterproductive path that does not yield the desired results.

Great way of looking at things. Focus and finish are two of the real solutions to the age-old question "What works?" Attracting traffic is one of the steps to considering a project finished.

I am probably one of the world's most ADD marketers right now and a major key for me is forcing myself to finish a certain number of projects before beginning more.

I love sticky notes (the digital kind) on my laptop for keeping a to-do list. I can't lose them, use them as a bookmark, or forget them. The cat can't eat them (weird little beast loves adhesive...) and my 2 year old can't "borrow" them and return them as confetti. They pop up occasionally when I am switching windows and help to remind me of my goals.

I also lose focus very easily. I also have a very analytical mind and my brain just analyzes everything automatically. It is quite a challenge to stop thinking about something and to just do it. There are pros and cons to being an analyzer. When you are first getting started it is not good to analyze too much because it distracts you from what you need to do. Later on when you have a system established the analytical abilities come in handy for improving your system and scaling it up to be more effective.

I love the fact that you have that focus when you sit at your computer. I have mentioned a couple of times that when I have needed money I do quite literally sit down in my computer chair and say to the screen "Give me money" and then I go ahead and make some. Sounds crazy but it does work for me - I figure it is a LOA type of thing

Knowing your skills and resources is also a good way to stop spending money on things you don't need - I found that when I was honest I had everything I needed to make money online; I just had to do something with what I had and my biggest barrier to that was the over analyzing things.

Now I just jump in and do things, and then tweak as I go - my income has certainly grown since then and like you, my $100 a day is something I know I can count on.

    Best wishes
    Lisa
