Does Internet Marketing Suck? Making The Mental Shift From Pain to Profits

INTERNET MARKETING SUCKS!!!

That's right, I said it.

Finally the truth.

I'm sure you've had that same thought at some point. How many times have you clicked on a banner ad or opened your email and found the latest, hottest, easiest, fastest way to make money online? The latest trends of course being autoblogging and social media marketing.

How many times have you seen headlines like, "$4,867 A Day", "242,187 Per Month?" Hell, I recently saw one that said over "500,000 In One Month."

Half a million dollars in 30 days. Are you freakin' kidding me?

Well I'm going to tell you a secret about those incredible earnings figures that the Gurus are bragging about.

THEY ARE ALL LIES!!!

That's right, they're lying to you. But not directly. More in a sneaky, sly manner.

The first thing you need to know is that those sales figures always come from product launches. Here's how it works.

Say Joe Smith is an internet marketer. He's doing OK for himself. He's selling some affiliate products. He may be blogging or doing social media marketing. He may use some software or found specific plugins to help automate his sites or to help with SEO.

So Joe Smith decides he wants create a product explaining some of the techniques he's using. He does his "research", gets a bunch of PLR material then puts together a brand, spanking new product.

He throws together a crappy PDF and gets some outsourced programmer to copy and paste some code. He makes a BS Power Point presentation and records it with Camtasia, then throws it up on a sales page right next to an "Add To Cart" button.

It sells for a ridiculously low price of $37. But if you try to leave the page you get a special $10 off discount. But you better buy now because there are only 9 copies left.

Really? Only 9 copies left of a digital product on ClickBank? Really? REALLY???!!!

But you buy it anyway.

Then there's $497 upsell.

Then a $297 upsell. And maybe more.

Don't be ashamed. I've done it too. In fact I still buy products all the time. The truth is, I usually find a bit of information that's useful to me and can help my business, so it's usually worth for me because I will actually implement the information. But will you?

We'll talk about that a bit later.

But back to Joe Smith.

So he has this product, he knows he needs to make sales so what's the best way for him to do that. The answer is JV Partners.

He announces to other internet marketers with huge lists that he's having a product launch
and everyone salivates at the dollars signs.

Joe smith watches as his ClickBank account explodes! Making tens of thousands of dollars over the next few weeks. And there you go.

That's where all those $200,000 in one month screenshots come from. They come from the product launch, not from the product.

THEY COME FROM THEIR PREVIOUS PRODUCT LAUNCH, NOT FROM THE NEW PRODUCT!

Oh, the humanity!

How dare they?!!

But you know what? Who cares?

I don't. Hey, we've all got our own free will. We can choose to either buy the product or not. The main thing you need to ask yourself when deciding whether or not to buy something is "Are you trying buy some useful information, product or service to help you business grow, or are you just buying the 'dream' of getting fast, easy cash?"

And this is the key point want to make.

STOP BUYING INTO THE DREAM OF EASY RICHES

It hardly ever exists. To have any long term success at ANYTHING, you need to have specialized knowledge, skills and above all else, perseverance.

I would say I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm not. Hey, at some point we all need a reality check. I know I do from time to time.

The fact is, you need to make a serious mental shift and figure out whether you have the desire and dedication to be truly successful in internet marketing. The fact is, you need to forget all about trying to make $1000 a day. You need to structure your business. You need to educate yourself, you need to follow an actual plan. You need to be in it for the long haul. You need to start thinking about making $10 a day. Then $100 a day. Then $1000 a day.

Stop buying into the dream. Start investing in reality.

You truly deserve success after all of your struggles and pain. It will happen if you have faith and strength. Stop spinning your wheels jumping from one thing to the next. Believe me, I know what that's like. I spent years searching and buying every new product that came out. But I did not make a single penny until I made a serious mental shift and began to slow down and develop a real plan for the real world.

So the truth is that yes, some of our internet marketing brothers and sisters do get a bit over the top and a bit tricky at times, but hey, no one can force you to buy anything, no one is twisting your arm. And if you really think the product is absolute junk, ClickBank is usually good when it comes to returns. As they say, "Don't hate the player, hate the game."

Always ask yourself if this product can really help your business grow. Will your business profit from this information? Always think in terms of your business not in terms of sports cars and mansions.

Then you will see it actually isn't so crazy to think of creating your own products, doing your own JV launch and having affiliates and JV partners making tons of sales for YOU. This is totally doable and its made easier everyday with so many tools available. You can easily create sites with Wordpress. You can easily create PDF ebooks with Open Office or Google Docs. You can create awesome sales and squeeze page funnels with templates like Socrates and JV Pages.

Everything you need is available to you. Make that mental shift into professional, business mode. Take time to learn, then take action. Don't be afraid of failure. Its vital for you to realize there are no failures, only results. But without action there can be no results. Neither bad, nor good.

Stay focused and strong and you will succeed!!!

    Interesting perspective - partly agree.

Would suggest you copy and paste that and put it on your blog. It does at least give you a different point to help to standout.

      Thanks.

I was going to post this on one of my blogs but the fact is I have never been actively posting to the WF even though I've been reading it for a long while. In fact, I just signed up a few weeks ago. So I decided to post it here. Also, I'm not sure if its against the rules to post something here then paste it somewhere else.

      Does anyone know?

    Who would've thunk it..?

But really, I joined this crowd 3 years ago.

    A little perseverance - Check

I figured out there are a ton of folks who are better salesmen, better writers, better designers, better strategists, better teachers than me...so I focused on my core competency -- programming...

    Skills - Check

So I've decided to program some stuff that other IM'ers might want.

    Specialize - Check

    Working out OK so far!

    Cheers,

    Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have been learning a lot about IM over the last few months and there defiantly is a pattern to the $37 offers (the emperor's New cloths). I went to a seminar last week in the UK and there was approximately 500 or so delegates attending. When I got the chance to speak with many of them, I politely posed three questions to them;

    1. Are you enjoying the day and information?
    2. Have you been doing this long?
    3. Have you had much success at this?

    The answers were quite concerning.

They said the seminar was ok, but they had all heard it before (kind of).

Many of them have been Trying IM for several years, 3, 4 and even 7 without results - What?

Success, no not much, was the general reply.

A common feeling I got from all of them was apathy towards taking any direct action.

I hope there are many that are succeeding, and this is not an industry that feeds on hopes and dreams only without substance.

This really sums it up, people see IM as the easy way to make their million. They try, this and they will try that, before giving up stating that the whole thing just doesn't work.

Ultimately Internet Marketing can and does work for people who work it. A little humility, a little hard graft, a little learning, and a lot of persistance and belief can go a long way.

As some one once said, "It is your attitude and not your apptitude, that determines your altitude" - ok I know it's bordering on sickly, but still a lot of truth in there

        Wow!

I didn't realize so many people would respond with such great information and support.

I haven't figured out how to respond individually with "quotes" yet, so this is a broad response.

I do believe its extremely important to make goals and write them down. In fact, I'm working on a product now where I talk about this a bit.

But basically I really think most people don't write down their goals and I really believe the main reason is not so obvious. It would be easy to say that people are just lazy, so they won't write down their dreams and ambitions.

I think the real truth is that people are so afraid of failure and so afraid that they may have to face their own failure that they never want to have physical, tangible, written proof that they had dreams and didn't fulfill them.

And worse yet, what would happen if someone else found your written goals? They would also know that you dreamed and failed.

So I think we all need to break out of this ridiculous mental slavery. The simple fact is that there can be no success without action, and with action there is only results. Results, good or bad to learn from.

Throw out the bad results. Replicate the good ones.

Another great point mentioned is the realization that internet marketing is a BUSINESS. A REAL BUSINESS.

I was disillusioned and bright eyed early on, but now I know the truth. But the thing is, its freakin' awesome!

I'm an artist, and the internet allows me to really do whatever I want on most days. Its really possible to turn what you know and love into income. As long as you can come up with an organized plan and can learn how to get what you know in front of people who are willing to pay for what you know, you can do alright.

Hopefully this thread will keep going and others will share their own feelings. Good and bad.

You're not so Silent anymore, Warrior. I like it! I put a similar little ditty in my free report for newbies. Didn't go into as much detail as you did, but it's nice to know someone else out there is telling it like it is.

I agree. The fact that you don’t see the other party whom you’re connecting to can be a disadvantage. However, you’ll get the best result as long as you use all your tools properly and maximize its promotion to other people in the market since internet is a good way to get more traffic.

I agree with most of what you've said. Unfortunately there are more and more IM's who think most people are idiot's.

Anyone who is new to internet marketing should stay focused and realize there is no 'secret' to $100,000 per month by paying $27 for a method. It just doesn't happen.

Follow the 'basic formulas' keep your head down and stick at it. Your time will come.

Very well said - don't buy into the marketing hype. The so called "gurus" have really done a number on this industry by promoting their self made trash. I would mention one program in particular, but I don't want to trash anyone. Let's just say it's self-help and essentially doesn't give the user anything real or useable.. just a credit card bill.

Seriously people, quit buying in to this crap. You won't get rich overnight.

You need to find a serious plan and put it into action. When you find a way to make some money, expand your process to multiply your earnings.

The money is out there and no, it's not at the bottom of an email titled "Make $238,914 in 30 Days", ROFL.

    Some interesting comments here.

Whilst I agree with many things said, what I think many people fail to do (including myself, until lately) is to really focus on building a proper business. It's almost like...forget the money making part for now, start with a clean slate, define what it is exactly you're after, go back to basics, write down goals, set targets, be accountable to yourself to stay on target, etc. etc.

I know, that's not very descriptive but, the more you DON'T know what you want, or have a STRUCTURED plan to achieve it, ie the more you WANDER, the more susceptible you are to buying this product and that product until either you give up, go broke, have a desktop full of crap (like me), or simply keep banging your head against the big brick wall in front of you which you could have easily been side-stepped had you stepped back to notice it in the first place. (wow, what a run-on sentence lol).

I can say this from experience, if you find you keep buying product to product, not implementing most of them, then you are NOT focused and you'd do yourself (and wallet) a big favor by just stepping back and writing down your goals. Then, go about finding the information necessary to achieve those goals.

I'll give you an example. I've been at IM for several years and NEVER built a list. I've never even tried!! Always felt, "what do I have to offer?" etc. Finally, after forming a business plan, it's now one of my major personal goals. Not everyone will want to build a list. That's not my point. What I'm saying is, as I stepped back to re-assess what exactly I wanted to achieve, list building became part of my overall strategy and I am now learning how to do that. But, list building is only one piece of the puzzle.

As I do that, and get subscribers, I can tick that off my "goal sheet". Make sense? I'm not even thinking about how much I'll earn from the list. I recognize that my emotional response to "making a killing with my list" would distract me from building the right kind of list, and respecting my subscribers. So, I have to really sit and think about creating high quality information or products (free or paid) to build my list. I want them to be happy they signed up! I've got lots to learn, but that's part of my plan.

I believe, if you really want to succeed, and by succeed (my definition) I mean to have not only a sustainable income but one that you can TRULY scale over time, then you need to have as clear a plan as possible IN THE BEGINNING.

So yes, don't give up. But, if you keep wandering and buying into the hype without a clear plan, then you probably aren't focused and may want to stop IM just for now until you assess and form a plan. Take a day off, write down your goals (even if they seem ridiculous like $100,000/month by 2012 or whatever).

Your goals may change as you learn more about what you want to achieve, but save your money until you have proper direction.

    • Hello. Ok! let me tell my opinion please.

YES, most of the IM lie lie lie. I have even stretched the truth a bit.

I really like how everyone is selling products at $37 or $47. It was proven that the number '7' gets much attention and looks like you need it . I am not sure, there was a study on numbers and what they do to your thought process.

Ok, I get sour sometimes as well. You sign up for someones 7 part course and you get thru it, only to get targeted with emails every other day. ugh! I think alot of IM stretch the truth or completely lie about their success. I like the post earlier about the people at the live seminar, they were saying that it takes time! YOu must be able to handle failure and negativity to be in this game. I outsource alot of my work and I hvae to babysit consistantly, I get so stressed sometimes.

I have found a few GREAT memberships that I have been involved with and wouldnt give them up for nothing, and then there is the ones that only offer info on the front end and then hope you will probably forget about the $19 per month fee.

I have gotten really good at looking thru the b/s. You will have to waste a little bit of money and time and you will soon see yourself that you can recognize the b/s with some of these 'special one time offers'

I guess it isnt easy, that is why there is a 97% failure rate! I have totally given up on MLM's and focus primarily on ranking local websites for businesses in my city/state. I find it much more satisfying to helping people with their struggles.

Sorry this is a bit long, but I agree with so many people in this thread: Remember this! THE IM VENTURE IS NOT THAT EASY PEOPLE!! BUT AS OTHERS ABOVE HAVE SAID; IF YOU ARE PERSISTANT YOU WILL BE FINE.

Just always try to learn something new everyday.

Persistence becomes a helluva lot easier if you have a game plan, a business strategy.

Sorry (to no one specifically) but to say "don't give up" is simply not enough. One can go on and on failing and making the same BAD mistakes if they aren't sure what they would like/need to achieve.

Build a plan, THEN be persistent, and you're much more likely to achieve success (spoken from experience)

You have touched on what probably hits a raw nerve for many people here, especially the beginners. There has been a rash of Clickbank products launching at the $37 price point that you mentioned, and they all utilize "blind" sales copy that is designed to hook innocent wide-eyed newbies into buying. I'm willing to wager that they're responsible for a lot of broken dreams and crushed hopes, because it sells the dream that so many people want to buy into (despite knowing deep down that it just can't be true). I sometimes wonder when this vicious cycle will stop, but as long as the money keeps flowing for these product creators and their JV partners, it'll just keep repeating itself.
