Does it make any difference if your site is verified by Google?

Google webmaster tools asks for site verification whereby you put a small bit of code to be verified.

Does it have any affect on the way your site is viewed by Google or rankings if you are not verified?

My understanding is the the verification process is about proving you own the site and thus enables you to access other tools for diagnostics and statistics.

I guess it can't hurt SEO that Google know the site is there and for real.

No, but it makes sense to get verified. You can achieve the whole process in 30 seconds, so why wouldn't you do it. The best way is to upload the xml file to your root directory using FTP. Once you've done this you'll get some great info about how Google reads your site.

The more often you're indexed the better. Make sure you submit and sitemap and a video sitemap.

Use Google XML sitemaps and video-sitemaps plugins if you're a WordPress user.

Getting your site verified gets Google to "look" at it. I would like to think it speeds up the time it takes to get indexed. I can't say for sure, but it makes me feel better.

What does the video site map do ... forgive my ignorance

It helps Google index video better. You can tell Google about tags, rating, length and a whole host of stuff. It should help your videos appear in the actual search results page.

With regards to verification, I don't think it has any effect on ranking, it just allows you to view the data about the site.

This isn't verifying your site. It's verifying your access to the site. This has nothing to do with your rankings at all.
