is affiliate marketing with old social networking sites and their partners (i.e. myspace, friendster etc.) worth the hassle?

anyone here have any advice or experience with this?

If you are in a hurry stick with the newer ones and you should be fine. Most social networks don't generate a lot of traffic anyway (Facebook and a few others being exceptions) so the fact that Myspace, etc aren't as popular anymore doesn't matter so much. The whole idea is to get high quality, high pagerank backlinks and the majority of the old social networks still provide that. So if your aim is to build quality backlinks to your affiliate site and/or index pages of your website they can still be effective. If traffic is your aim I would stick to the newer, more popular ones for obvious reasons.

They convert BUT unlike years ago. What's in history should remain in history.

My personal advise is for you to choose what's on the fad today (Facebook, Twitter, etc) Besides, old sites are "dying" sites. You can still do some affiliate marketing with them but don't expect a very good or profitable outcome.

If you are getting good result from the newer social networking sites than why to go for old. Most of the people are using newer sites like facebook and twitter to get effective result, so focus more on that , you will surely get good results.

In my opinion social networks are better for building a brand than getting conversions but if you want to use the I'd say go with a FB fan page

Just use Facebook, why try to fight evolution?

What if you had a good campaign going on Friendster today, it took a lot of time to learn how to use the platform and connect with that networks mindset, only to find that the number of users is further diminished daily?

You are left with having to face the prospect of packing up too.

Create a facebook page, get creative and make your users WANT to interact with you. Get their email address after they like your page and roll that way.
