Newbie - I have a product, but need IM advice

Let me start by saying that this is my first forum I have ever joined as well as my first post, so please forgive me if I make all the same newbie mistakes you have come to hate. I promise that I will try to make them only once. I have read through several newbie posts as well as the FAQs and rules in an attempt to not do anything too stupid, but please correct me if I have. I also intend to become a paid member as soon as I am comfortable that I have found the right community to help me grow my online business. That said, here is my story...

My wife has been making metal jewelry for the last 2.5 years, and selling through an online artist community called Etsy (3squares.etsy.com). She does all the networking, social media, promotions, etc. to market this site, and makes a modest amount of sales ($4-5k in GP /yr). These sales of course come primarily from those involved in the community itself, or those who may have purchased from an Etsy member previously and are familiar with the site.

I lost my job in June, and have been looking at how I can boost her sales to help provide more income for our family while I look for a replacement. It would seem to me in my newbie mind that I need to open up more channels, and get her popping up in more searches online. I just don't know what the right ways are to do that. I built a functioning website at: 3squares.co, but without something to drive traffic it is of course useless. I have heard that changing content frequently such as a blog is good, but she is too busy in the manufacturing to do this, and I would not know what to write and how often. I have also heard about list building and email services, but they cost money. I tried Google Adwords and facebook Ads, but like 1 million before me I got a bunch of clicks and no sales. I just can't risk burning through more cash with Christmas coming and a mortgage to pay with both of us out of work. Ultimately I would love for us to be self sustaining, but I am sure at this point that I don't know enough about selling on the internet to make that happen, so I am searching for some guidance on what I should do next.

Maybe it starts with something as simple as should I:
-focus on driving more traffic to the Etsy site that is already 100% setup and manageable, but buyers have to join (cost is free) before purchasing. Etsy takes 2.9% of the sales. What would be the first thing to do?
or
-continue to build out the separate website and somehow drive traffic to that.
or
- perhaps I an somehow part of an affiliate program where someone else runs the site and makes the sales, and I just deliver the goods although that seems similar to the Etsy system but without the marketing.

Thanks all, and I hope I am where you are in a few months, and can help someone else that comes along in a pickle like me.

John

  • Hi John

I would be tempted to do the following with your own site:
    1. Check out the best key words for items you are selling (making sure the visitors are going to be highly focused to prevent the high click but low action crowd you've been getting.
    2. Purchase a domain name preferably containing the keywords chosen.
    3. Get some web hosting if you haven't already.
    4. Create a simple Word press site utilising the key words.
    5. Promote using using social bookmarking, press releases, articles, back links from Web 2.0 sites, creation of a short YouTube video (i've found that these are the things that can be got reasonabley successfully through Fiverr.com)
Hopefully all the baove should not cost more than £50 tops (and probably a lot less if you do things your self).
Obviously a very abridge version of the actions to carry out, but hopefully it should help. If you do want to drop me a line to discuss it further please feel free to drop me a pm.

I wish you all the best with your venture.

    regards
    Andy

I use them a couple times/mo for lead gen and affiliate stuff. I use the newsletters (text and banners) 1 of each....Let me save you some time. Stay away from the Quick Click ads, New Yorker ads and Stand-alone Solos. They cost too much for what you get.
The reason, I keep using them is because I actually can talk to a real person and ask him questions on the phone before I spend my money. My rep (Paul) helped me with my ad the first time...he also showed me how to test it and improve it before I spent the big bucks...

Like I said I use them over and over, he may be able to help you ...here's his info...

If you hit him up, tell him A.D. sent you...maybe he'll give me a free run in that Bargain Hunters newsletter...That thing is the TRUTH! If I didn't have kids and bills, I would run one of those every week!
      Good luck

    Hi John...

I'm going to give you my 2 cents... having been in the "selling arts/crafts" biz for years. (before the internet became a household word)

Jewelry is a touchy - feel thing. Most women want to try it on before purchasing. Once someone has purchased or even held some of your wife's jewelry... they should become loyal and purchase more.

This is all part of building a brand.

It won't be about driving traffic to your site... unless you have a hungry market for your product.

Go local! Get into as many shows as possible... build a following... get those people on your mailing list...

Go custom! Create one-of-a-kind special jewelry for someone to give as a gift.

Go cheap! Always have a small portion of you inventory that is cheap. Like a lost leader. Make it irresistible to turn down. This gets a ton of product onto many people...

You want "Where did you get that"? to happen as many times as you can.

That's how you sell handmade goods.

Did you know that you can use Public Domain content for articles, blog posts, products, free reports and more? Debra's Public Domain Treasure Hunter blog can show you how....

    John,

There are some excellent points raised above, in addition to that, find out more about your target market, their age, what they purchase from you and where they hang out on the internet forums etc.

The going local advice is also spot on as people still enjoy the social side of buying products.

My advice would be to research your customers further, utilise all the FREE marketing methods, and listen to what your customers want and to supply people what they are looking to buy.

On a totally different point of view - have you considered doing a course on how to create jewelry. 'How to Make a Home Business creating your own Jewelry". Not sure how it would sell but it might be a totally different course to take your wife's business.

Test it with a report or an ebook and if you get interested people then go for something with a higher cost value.

Sometimes doing something a little different can make all the difference.
