What software do I need to build 5 page website?

I want to build a 5 page website, where all the pages have the same menu (i.e. all link to each other). I'd like basic php functionality. But I do not want to use a CMS that uses a database (so that rules out wordpress).

What is the best open source software to do this?

Why do you not want to use wordpress? It's a great option, imo.

It's great software. But I'm starting out and using shared hosting. My host appears to be having issues with the strains that I'm already putting on it. So I therefore do not want to use anything that connects to a database.

My advice would be to upgrade your hosting and just use Wordpress.

        I'd dump the host.
But if you Google open source html editor, there's plenty. I use Dreamweaver, so don't know which would be the best free software.

Strains? With a five page site? That must be some awesome content!

Probably straight HTML would be best in your case.

If the page will be static (although you said you wanted PHP functionality) you could go for static HTML pages. What sort of PHP functionality do you want? 5 pages could work with a simple template. Then you'd only need Notepad.

Use a text editor on a good html template. If you need one, Open Source Web Design - Download free web design templates. has some good ones for free.

To get the php functionality, change the extension from .htm or .html to .php, insert your code in the right place, and you're set.

Wordpress is a good tool to build your web pages. It's simple and easy. I'm using wordpress via bluehost. Search engines love wordpress, and it will help you in SEO ranking.

You don't really need "software" to build simple html pages, just a decent editor.
Try editor PSPad - freeware HTML editor, PHP editor, XHTML, JavaScript, ASP, Perl, C, HEX editor - it's free.

Create the 5 html pages (if html, you can see them in the preview) and - as it was said above - save as ...php

    Done.

For everybody suggesting WP: for a 5 pages sites nobody needs WP...
