Starting a website(s) for my local community and wanted to know your thoughts on local (online and offline) promotion.

I know it's a broad question....

A few years ago me and my business partner and another friend started a local art and craft market. One of the things I did was write to the local paper (actually I emailed them) with a press release. It made it to the third page of the paper and resulted in hundreds of people flooding through the doors of the first market we ever had.

So I would suggest writing a press release and submitting it to your local papers and even your local tv and radio stations. They love content.

Also submit to as many online local business directories that you can find.

      11. Internet press releases with a podcast or video attached increases the likelihood that the release will
perform well and be picked up by more channels. Thanks to Bill Balderaz of Webbed Marketing.
Just curious, what is the best way to distribute a press release? I looked into PRWeb, and it was pretty expensive. Is there a better way?

You could also set up a locally targeted PPC campaign as well.

There are plenty of free press release sites to submit to. Just type in 'free press release sites' or something similar into Google.

If you are focusing locally then submit them directly to your local paper/tv stations/radio stations. Just find their email address on their website and send it through.

When we submitted to our local radio station they asked us to do an on-air radio chat for their 'whats-on locally' spot.

Offline promotion sometimes works even better than online promotions. You can print out your advertisement in leaflets and paste it on public places, free-boards, etc.. In online promotions it is advisable that you use a local ad site or simply make use of the powerful Craigslist, just make sure your ad will not get flagged.

When promoting your local website, you should consider important factors that is essential to your prospect clients. Surely they will look for answers to their questions such as: "What information can you give me and what services can you offer me"?

There is no need to use the paid press release sites if your budget doesn't allow for it. Just google "free press release sites", and you'll find numerous free ones to work with.

We hand out 2000 flyers a week but of course most people here will tell you that flyers don't work. (Hint: Don't listen to them.)

A long, long time ago we used pens and they definitely worked. The trick is to get them out there, they don't do any good sitting in a box.
