Amazon S3 Vs Dedicated Server

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on whether Amazon S3 or a dedicated server is better for running video membership products?

I have a couple of small video member sites at the moment on a dedicated server. However I am working on a much bigger video membership site that will be given a big push and hopefully gain quite a lot of members.

I did buy the dedicated server specifically with this product on mind, however I am a little concerned that even a dedicated server wont handle the traffic and data transfer well and that Amazon S3 would be a better solution?

Run the membership program on your server and store your videos for instance of Amazon if the file size is to large. You cannot run scripts or programs on Amazon servers.

I would advise you to run your membership site on your current server and set up a new dedicated server on cloud hosting like stormondemand.com and host all of your videos there and since you can upgrade downgrade those cloud server anytime with just a few simple clicks you will be only using and paying whatever resources your site needs. You will be saving lot's of money. At least that's what I do and it does saves me lot's of money.

I'm using stormondemand.com myself, however I do not recommend using it to host files that eat up a lot of bandwidth as the bandwitdth's prices are quite expensive. However if price is not a factor for you, then by all means go for it. :-)

I'm not sure you would need a dedicated for that? Why not run the site off shared hosting, and host the videos on S3. That's what I did.

In hindsight that may have been a good option yes. However, when I bought the dedicated server I wasnt really aware of what you could do with S3 so hadnt looked at it as an option.

Still, a dedicated server is expensive but I dont think its a bad idea to use dedicated rather than shared servers if you are a full-time online marketer. Gives you that little bit extra security knowing exactly what sites you are sharing the server with.

Thanks for the input everyone....seems that hosting the site on my dedicated server but streaming the content with S3 may be the best route to take

Ahh so you bought it already. Yea if I were you I would use it to host and stream the content on the S3, just like you said. You will never have bandwidth problems that's for sure, and you will have plenty of room to add other projects. Good luck with it!

Ohhh... by the way I forgot to mention Mediafire Pro:
Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

Which is what I'm currently testing and it looks cheap.

      Hi,

I don't think they have embed-able video player.

      Not sure.

Amazon charge for bandwidth. There are plenty of cheap servers that come with 100mb line and unlimited bandwidth so they will work out a lot cheaper. The real benefit of Amazon S3 is offsite storage and back up

Definitely run your script on your server and set up amazon to host your larger files.

I use this exact setup - dedicated server and S3. There is no need to host your files on your own servers anymore. It just slows everything down and churns up your bandwidth. My members are always commenting how quickly the Amazon S3 files download.

For Membership website always recommend for your own Dedicated server. Here you can run anything, if your you rae going to host the video , the be careful about space, in video website you have to give the two priority space and RAM..

I also agree that S3 (or any reputable CDN) is the best route to go for video or big files. With a dedicated everything is accessed on your server, with S3 your files will be accessed a lot faster because of their network.
