Competing with Free Info?

Looking into a new niche with great numbers (over 33,000 exact searches a month and only 400,000 competing sites without too much tough competition on first two pages) but my concern is this...

Right now on first page of google there are a bunch of quality FREE info sites on the topic.

Even worth pursuing to test this market and any suggestion as to what you'd do to try it without putting out a ton of money or time up front in case you can't compete with free?

Or do you skip it when you see a lot of free quality info (albeit on crappy looking and hard to maneuver sites!)

Obviously there is free info on every topic, but how to do figure that in to determining whether to go for a product or not?

    Two Things:

    1. I don't measure the quantity of competition but the quality of competition when going after long-tail keywords in Google... Look at the web pages on page one of Google to see how many inbound links are indicated by Google for each individual URL... Then check back links in Yahoo also... Google will only show a portion of what they count, and Yahoo will show a lot of junk in the results... The truth is somewhere in between...

    2. If a niche can be profitable in Google, it can also be profitable outside of Google... Test with some other Traffic Sources to see if you can turn a profit on the niche... If you can, it may be worth pursuing in Google SERPs, regardless of the competition or cost...
