Hi Warriors,
Do you all still target long tail keywords for seo, or isnt it really needed now.
Ive checked many pages for various different searches, that appear on the front page of google, and the keywords they are targeting are never usually listed in the meta keywords text when checking the pages info.

So does this mean that the search engines dont really use keywords at all, and its all about the page content ? and backlinks !

Whats the best tool for "Reverse Engineering" another websites seo ?

i'm not an expert, but as far as im concerned, i target the keyword that i think is most relevant to my website content. that may seem a stupid answer, but its how i roll if it's selling something, i try to make it a buyer keyword.
for example i have a few business websites. i target "buy (the service)" and also check the competition for that keyword. if i think its' doable, i optimize my site for it and go after it. also, i usually only target a couple keywords per site. looking for decent search volume and as little competition as possiblle, while maintaining a good buyer keyword.

like i said i'm no expert and that may be a dumb answer but it works for me

Ye but, when you checkout other sites, on page 1 of google, for what you search for, and very often, the websites listed keywords, are nothing that you actually searched for !

Isnt this wrong ? It shows that keywords actually mean nothing to the searches anymore !

In my niche long tail works well for select type products. It gets them exactly where they want to be.

    Hey Tum,

If you're talking about keywords in meta tags. Then NO, they are NOT important at all!

A search engine optimized page will have keywords in the title/h1 tags or at least the content. I hope that answers your question that the top results do not contain keywords. I can bet they do.

I repeat, SEO has little to do with meta keywords.

Ye, thats what i mean, Thanks Webfighter ! Ye i do see the keywords in the page and title, but just not listed in the meta keywords, they seem to be targeting the site for !

So when you pick your keyword or long tail keywords, the main place to put them is actually in the title, and headings, of the home page of your website ?

With this in mind, am betting its best to have a static homepage, with the main content on for the targeted keywords and new posts getting posted in a sub menu section of my blog or somthing ?

Yes, homepage and every other page! Have you ever used a content management system or a blogging software like wordpress?

If yes, wordpress needs only little tweaking and preferably a couple of plugins to make it seo friendly. You can simply google on how to optimize a wordpress blog for search engines.

I believe that Google pays little to no weight for the meta keywords; but that Yahoo & MSN still gives them some....

Mainly it is the keywords in your content. I find that the keyword in the title, the h1 & h2, and then the keyword in the opening sentence, somewhere in the middle of the body, and at the end of the content works well....

Long tail keywords are easier to rank for but if I can get a single keyword to rank well then I use both. Experiment to see which works best for you and do not pick keywords that are so competitive that you will never rank for them. If you want to rank for long tails, make sure your blog is about those keywords that you are ranking for.

  • You will want your home page to target your hardest to rank for, most competitive keyword phrase(s) that you intend to go after. The next level of pages 1 click from the home page (generally those in your top nav) should target the next hardest to rank for, next most competitive keyword phrases. And so on... The deeper you drill into the site, the more long tail the keywords being targeted should be.
