Rankings dropped sharply for a website with high quality content

Hi,

Google traffic for my website has dropped by 70-80% all of a sudden, since 22nd Oct 2010. No major changes have been done to the site. I used to rank well for most of our products.

We have added a few new products and modifies just a few and re-submitted the sitemap, after which we saw this major drop-down in ranking.

Can anyone help or suggest what needs to be done.

Regards,
Sandy

Google updates 400 times a year and uses over 200 factors in their algorithms. It will be very hard to tell you based on the short information above...

I'm sorry as I can't reveal the url as I do not want my site to be found on the thread when someone search for the url as my competitors will know of my problem and don't know what kind of further damage can be done by them.

Im guessing that you found your new competitor. Maybe they tried to copy your system that is why you were outranked.

    Sandy,

Yes. Analyze who replaced you and everyone else who is new. Like was
said above, good chance someone emulated your strategy and out-did
you. Perhaps. Like was also said, too many things to consider without
enough info. But I understand why you can't discuss more.

But that is where I would start - with the new sites occupying where
    you were.

Don't despair. If you got complacent, not saying you did, then that's
when we all get thumped a little.

So, see what needs to be done based on who's above you. Then do it
in spades, keep doing it and never stop.

The comp never sleeps and neither should you.

    Good luck, you'll be fine.

    Ken

You had a sudden drop in traffic 3 days ago and you're acting like your business is in danger?

First of all, relax. Until such a decline doesn't last for at least 14 days, it might be just that it was a weekend or people weren't in the mood for browsing the net.

Google up your keywords and see who is outranking you (if anyone at all), go through their website and try to figure out why.

And evaluate the link structure of sites which have replaced you. Do they now have more backlinks than you for your targeted keywords?

Hmmmm...During your "adding a few products" did you play with your internal link structure in any way? Resubmitting your sitemap probably sent Google scurrying through your entire site again, and if you dramatically changed you internal links it could have made a big effect.

Also, during this process of adding products and submitting a new sitemap is there any chance Google is now finding broken links in your site?
