What made YOU want to get into IM?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking on this forum for a little while and decided I finally needed to join and start posting. So yeah, I'm new. Bear with me. My names Alexa btw.

Anyways, I was wondering what everyone's story was that made them want to get into internet marketing. I'll start by sharing mine.

It all started not too long ago. I was hard-core looking for a job for months and months. I was on craigslist and indeed and all those other job websites every day submitting my resume. I finally got one interview at an inbound call center, and I was super excited. They didn't contact me for a month and then finally emailed me telling me I didn't get the job. I ended up getting another interview at another call center that did saves and upsells. I found out I got the job right after the interview. I was so excited! I was going to be making pretty good money for a college-aged student.

I started training and basically learned that what I would be doing is upselling to people who had just purchased a work-at-home program targeted at Ebay. After a few weeks of working there I learned a few things. I got A LOT of complaints about the programs false advertising. Basically the program said that you could easily earn $75 an hour but doing simple data entry. It promised $5 per listing you posted on ebay. When they bought the program (which depending on the site they landed on was $60, or $120) they later found out that they weren't paid per listing, they were paid for each listing that sold. So they learned that they would be buying and selling on ebay, which was not what they signed up for. They were sent to a certification program that "certified" them to be able to use the dropshipper's products. Even people that got as far as finishing the certification found out that one, the dropshipper's products sucked and there was no way to make money on them, and two, they were never told that they would have to pay a monthly fee for using the dropshipper.

On top of all this, I had to upsell them a product that was $100-$200 that was basically online videos that taught them about ebay and dropshipping and such, which is pretty much all the info they learn in the book that is sent to them. I started out optimistic, but gradually I got more and more miserable when I felt like I had to lie to people to get them to buy. I HATED that. I HATED hearing people say no because they just ignored their bills so they could spend the LAST amount of money they had on this program. They were sacrificing buying groceries for their family to get this program. I felt HORRIBLE. My sales were horrible too. I just COULD NOT sell something I knew was a scam. After only a month and a half of working there, I was fired for not making enough sales.

In the middle of all this, I started reading the stuff that people who purchased the program received. I started hatching the idea that maybe I could make money online. But not through ebay like these people were trying to do. Maybe I could be on the other side of the table and be the one selling the products to other people. Except I wouldn't be selling lies and scams. My conscience does not allow me to lie to people like that. I figured that if I could sell a product that was worthwhile and actually worked, that I could make really good money.

That's when I searched google for ways to make money with ebooks. I came upon Tiffany Dow's "Building an Ebook Empire" and I read it religiously. After reading that I continued to do more and more research on all the facets of internet marketing. And now here I am, working on my first info product and a couple of other ideas I'm hatching.

How about you guys? What got you started in the internet marketing business?

    Welcome to the forum Alexa,

Your story sounds very familiar, I have a friend who has been talking to me a lot lately about IM because he works at a call center selling a similar program, only he works in the customer service department. He has been dealing with all the complaints and at the same time seeing how much these people who own the company are selling. His eyes have been opened to the potential of selling info products online, just like you.

Like I said, welcome, and learn all you can here on the forum. There is a ton of great info in here, and also look into getting a War Room membership, it's well worth it.

    Thanks for the welcome.
And yeah, it really does open your eyes as to how much money these companies are making. I took about 80 calls a day of people who had just signed up. That was working four hours. And there were about 40 other people working there.

It makes my head spin. I know they have a high return rate but the amount of people who don't return still has to be good enough to be making a TON of money.

Rest assured that not all products have a high return rate. Also, the product you were doing support for may not have had a high return rate at all. They were just doing such high volume, even a 2% - 5% refund rate would appear like a ton more to the casual observer. Percentage wise, return rates are really low in non-IM niche markets.

      Cheers,
      Matt

I took an online marketing course at the Hawaii Pacific University back in Spring of 1998. It got me very excited because you could reach a whole world. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. There are lots of companies selling scams so lets all work together to bring high value to ppl instead. This is what everyone needs and the web needs...

Well I have tried internet marketing myself so I can support myself. I read your story and I felt bad that you have to go through such pressure with a scam company. Glad you were able to move on, you made the right choice not to stay with them.

Welcome to the warrior community, Im sure you'll be learning a lot from here, just like me.

The freedom. Whenever I worked a job I have to be there on their watch, on their hours by their rules. Not only that but the stability of it is in question and they can fire me if I am no longer needed (especially in today's economy). I like the feeling of relying on myself because at the end of the day that's the one person you can truly count on. I'm often reminded of something my dad said: "You can't fire yourself."

My reasons were very similar. The freedom to be your own boss and to do things exactly how and when you wanted to do them was very appealing to me, and in addition to that I knew that there'd be no predefined cap on my earnings as I would ultimately get to decide how much I wanted to earn from my own efforts in IM.

I was (and still am) an IT teacher - teaching adults. I am also unable to work in full-time employment as I get sacked for being off sick - 3 times was enough!!

Self-employment was the way - people are nicer to you and when I'm not well, they wait til I'm better rather than sacking me.

I started online selling my IT course books. The rest is history and I'm learning all the time. The more you learn, the more there is to learn.

In the last few months I have finally become serious about trying to earn a full income online, supplemented by my offline work - rather than the other way around.

I am working on a few long-term (2-3 year) projects.

Tiffany is one of the good guys. I haven't read her book - but I'm sure it will have given you a solid foundation to build on.

      Good luck.

    Was about 8 years ago.

I needed a way to upload a couple of images to the internet (for forum use).
So I created a small image upload form and uploaded it to a domain and left it alone.

Then, 1-2 months later I got an email from my hosting provider than my account has been disabled (temporary) because of too much traffic.

I checked and there was like 5-10.000 image uploads (dont remember), found out that the site was picked up by a few big sites which posted some news about it.

I increased my hosting plan, slammed a few ads up and instantly started to earn around $5-600 per month.

A couple of years ago I closed it down, it has grown too big, too many problems and little profit.
It has 1.1M registred members at that point.

    That kick started everything.
I have mostly been creating membership sites though (free ones).

I loved your story and all credit for you for not only getting out when you did, but also seeing the opportunity that was there in front of you. Well done

I started as a freelancer online and have been my own boss for more than ten years. But now the kids are grown and there is only hubby and I at home we have both been thinking that we don't want to be "working" all of the time. I was writing ebooks for clients who were selling them as part of their internet empire - and I am getting a flat fee, lol. So now in my spare time I research and try out other methods of making a residual income; and creating some products of my own for sale.

Working for yourself is really rewarding - I have not had anyone tell me I have to be at a certain place, at a certain time since the day I got married. I can work all night if I feel like it, or get up early and work then. I can take time off to be with my kids and grandkids when they visit, and when I was really sick, my clients understood and I didn't get any pressure from them to do more than I could.

You are on the right path and in the right place to learn

    All the very best

I love reading these types of posts. For me it was more of a hobby type of thing (actually still is but a profitable one) as I retired from the Army 5 years ago at the ripe old age of 37. I had no problem finding a day job so I was looking for ways to supplement my income since I was only working 8-5 everyday (big difference from what I was used to). So basically, I stumbled upon IM as an attempt to cure my bordem with so much time on my hands.

One of these days Ill really concentrate and hopefully make a full time income at this. Currently I make enough to cover Christmas, a car payment and 2 luxury vacations each year. Not a whole lot but not too bad for a hobby.

My wife always gets on me for being on the computer so much but she doesnt complain when we are on our annual cruise.

first of all alexa, welcome to the forum! great to see you here. you will learn alot as many of us do
i just saw all kinds of things online which ended up being scams in one form or another, but common sense told me there HAD to be a way to make money online. so i decided to start researching it.
i came accross a guy named dave who showed me how to cheat using cpa networks, and i'm ashamed to say i did it for about 3 months. made some decent money untill i got caught! needless to say, once i paid back a network $1500 i made the previous months, and was threatened to be sued, i never went back to that again!

then i started researching alot of other ways to make money online. i tried affiliate marketing and cpa for a while; ppc, ppv, media buys, etc etc. i never had the success i was looking for. the best i did was break even.

then i started doing heavy research on the forum on different ways to make money. i bought some wsos and some worked and some didn't. i spent some money on sites, some were scam artists, some made money. in the end i started looking into offline marketing. it occured to me that i could gain knolwedge and start offering the things businesses needed to make some nice cash. in the end, that stalled, but i continued to learn more and more about different internet marketing services.

now for the last six months, i have been offering these services online and offline. i use my reputation for different services online and my testimonials on my service sites to show my offline contacts and close the deal. i price my services affordably, and they get results. so now i'm starting to pick up offline referal business, which i have found is very easy to close.

i guess the bottom line is, i wanted to be an online millionaire. but i understand now that it will take time and dedication to get the big paydays. now i'm working on expanding, and seo on my service site to get more business.

i wish you nothing but success and hope that you find one thing that works and put forth the effort to make a nice living
    my two cents.

I'm so glad for you that you were able to escape the program, and rest assured that you can clean up your conscience by making a living helping people in other areas of IM! You don't have to sell junk to make a living... in fact, those who share truly awesome information often do better in the long run. Plus, you won't have to keep running from karma.

I started IM because I was determined to quit my day job (which made me work illegal hours in a worse and worse environment), and knew there had to be another way to make money than to sell your soul to a corporation.

Writing for money occurred to me in February of 2009, and I started out on Helium, which taught me how to write a proper article that people would like more than most other articles. My first payment threshold was crossed in April or May of 2009, and I was so hooked.

At this point, I quit my job because my mental health demanded it, and I couldn't do too much writing because I was still totally exhausted and drained from trying to deal with the incredible negative effects of the job I'd just left.

Over the summer, I moved into other, better, content sites next. I finally succeeded once I figured out how to get private clients.

Fast-forward to today and I'm changing my business model from a service provider, which is a great way to get started fast but requires you to be right there at your computer typing to make money, to a solution provider, which can be passive income.

There's lots of ways to make money, and they don't require you to be scamming people.

I love hearing about everyone's stories.
The thing I love about IM is that there's no limit, the more you work, the more results you're going to get. Plus you're working on your terms, with no boss, and you have control of your life. I just love when I get ideas buzzing in my head for all the business opportunities I could pursue. There's just so much possibility in IM! =]

Absolutely agree! IM sure beats a 9 - 5 job with fixed pay. Thanks for sharing your story Alexa. It's cool to read everyone's story too.

If you want financial freedom, being your own boss and having your own business, whether it's online or offline, is the way to go. I've long given up the concept that you need to work hard (especially for someone else) to make money. You just need to work smart, for yourself.

At first I got into IM because I was in a tight financial situation. I wanted to earn some extra cash so started searching on Google for ways to earn money online. Eventually, it lead me to this forum where I've learned most of what I now know.

Since learning whats possible, like many others, I too am now attracted to the long term idea of being my own boss and having that freedom. While I currently have a part time offline job that I enjoy and have no desire to quit, the goal of eventually working for myself in the future is one I will slowly persue.

I was working as a Senior Account Manager for a major Marketing Services business looking after a Government Account. Big career and all that but my bosses were driving me insane. They treated me badly even though I did really well for them and increased the size of the contract to a multi million pound account.

Long story short I knew I needed to take action when my job pressures really began to impact on my family and began looking for an opportunity to start my own business.

One day I Googled something like 'how to make money' and came across a book called Google Cash by a guy called Chris Carpenter. It was all about making money with Adwords and more by luck than anything else I quickly made a £200 commission in one hit.

That was it I became addicted and the rest as they say is history.

I now have my own online business working from my worn out old Dell at home.

Loving it and not going back

To party with "Shoemoney" at the playboy mansion. I guess that's more of a perk.

At first it was to make extra money whenever I really wanted to, just from a computer. That to me is like one of the coolest things ever. I mean seriously, I type on my computer for a few hours per day and get money wired to my accounts.

But then it became more about the freedom and being able to make money online in the comfort of my own room. You aren't going to find a better opportunity to start your own business with little investment or risk than from an internet business.

I was working a bad IT job for the past 2 years which involved bad traffic, long hours, and terrible supervisors. It paid pretty decently, but I hated it and only duked it out because I felt that I should be grateful to even have a job in this economy. I got into IM through trying to find a method to make money from home and obviously fell for the "make $10,000 in a week" pitch, hoping that I would quit my job.

2 weeks in, I wanted to give up since I wasn't seeing the "promised" results and thought it was just all a scam. After getting yelled at during work one day, I hopped back on it and realized that HARD work is involved, but it's not rocket science.

I got laid off from that terrible IT job last month which stopped my IM for a bit. But now I'm working as a database admin much closer to where I live and it's much easier and more relaxing than my old IT job. Now I've saved up enough excess money to get back into my IM ventures.

I'm 6 months in and I haven't made a dime yet, but I feel that I'm getting closer and I'm confident I will make my first dollar by the year's end.

    Welcome to the club.

Hi Alexa, thanks for sharing your story. I myself just started IM as well. Still a newbie learning stage.

The reason to get me involve in IM is because of me hating to work from mon to fri, waking up early and go to work. This robot routine just dries me up. I prefer to work at home and using Internet to earn a living. I came across IM not long ago, did some research and course, and now I wanna apply what I have learn. Trying to change my IM from a part time income to full time income.

As for me, believe it or not, my computer skills are horrible, I don't even know how to blog! So I signed up a course, with topics like blogging, and the best part is, it teaches about Internet Marketing too. Hence, to me, it is the desire to learn blogging first and through it, if I can follow and do exactly as what is being taught and ultimately , helps to bring in some income for me, that is really a bonus. Of course, with so much being mentioned about people making tons of money in IM,one cannot help, but feel curious about it too. The next question I asked myself, can I be like them?

I started with a few products and CPA, moved onto a few blogs and have done a bunch of work for some product launches including video, layout, site design, etc...

The reason I can take the time required to be "in the game" is because I am a Systems Architect and already know all about Social Media, advertising, marketing and Web 2.0 (amongst other non-techie things) as well as all of the backend stuff like Unix, SQL, WP, Joomla, etc...

I stumbled into it actually. I've blogged a bit and made some adsense money. I wanted to promote a certain product, so I poked around to see if they had an affiliate program, and they did. It was part of a network and that's when I discovered how huge internet marketing was. I had huge success with my first venture, and I decided then and there that it's stupid do anything else with myself.

I've been working online for three years anyway. I don't handle 9-5 well, so the Internet offers the luxury of working when and where I want.

I was laid off from my fancy corporate job 2 years ago and started a Crime Scene Clean Up company (yes - I did this).

I was too cheap to hire pro's for anything so built my own website and then started learning how to market my business online. I stumbled onto what you guys were doing and liked that way better than cleaning up dead bodies.

    Hi Alexa,

Great story, everybody runs into roadblocks, dead ends and brick walls. It's the ones who pick themselves up, dust themselves off and push forward that succeed. In my case I lost most of my 401K and savings investing in a building material business and at 64 had to start over as a salesperson.

    Thank you for sharing Alexa.

What made me get into internet marketing?

When what people told me didn't add up... In '07 I started a car magazine and having a website was a prerequisite. I knew nothing, absolutely nothing about internet and websites. So, I turned to my friend who made a successful decade from website building. What I found out was that yeah, he could build a website for a fantastic amount of money, but had very limited knowledge about doing business online.

I paid a lot of people a lot of money to show me how to harness the internet at the time, but nothing ever seemed to do what they claimed it would do. I had a big puzzle on my mind. So, I started to solve it piece by piece in oerder to better understand it. The internet is the future, and an internet connection is slowly replacing everything we use to communicate; telephones, t.v., and mail. I think understanding how to use it is important - even if you don't make your money "online".

After building some websites, I learned just how integral IM really is. I learned about it so that I can evaluate what the "expert" sitting across from me can really do for the money I am paying.

So what if my website is number one on Google, how does this translate into sales? How do I capture information. How do I improve these? How do I get people to sell my stuff? How can I help people with what I have with the internet? These were some questions I wanted answered, and the people around me had conflicting and confusing answers.

I started IM to clear some things up, get an education, look to the future and how it can benefit me, and my customers.

    Ryan.

I hate my job, it's a good paying job but I don't want to do it anymore. I wanted to be my own boss so a few months ago I set out on a journey just to do that. Came across some bum marketing material that eventually led me here.

If it wasn't for this forum I would be no where, in little over the last month I've finally reached success in IM and that success is growing. Eventually I will be able to quit my full time job and do IM full time. I really enjoy the IM business and will be glad when it become my full time job instead of working all day then coming home and working on IM for 4 to 6 hours.

I was looking for a way to make some extra cash online through a work at home job, because my current job was not cutting it. While I was on a work at home forum when someone mentioned they had a book for free on how to make only online writing. To get the ebook you had to do a survey, it was texted to your and I didn't have to enter a credit card and I got the book. Now the writer of this book fully said he gets paid for this free book he is giving you.

Started researching this clickbank thing the book mentioned. Then I found Tiffany Dow's videos on youtube and then her website and paid attention. Started doing free Squidoo selling Amazon. That is going good and now moving on to Clickbank. Before I actually started doing websites I learned Seo like nothing else and everything else about lists, search engines, and backlinks. I wrote articles and reports as a ghostwriter and no I feel like I can really branch out. I am also documenting my journey from zero sales to a lot more than one to make a easy product for newbies later on.

Now I feel blessed to work at home instead of struggling to keep my job and get enough hours and everything else. If I want more money I make more sites and I promote harder. Today I made three niche sites, a report and website to go along with it, and a round of article marketing for some backlinks for everything.
