From Good to Great! - What it takes?

I was recently in chapters and I saw a book on the shelf entitled " From Good to Great " Why some companies make the leap and others dont

And it got me thinking.

There are all manner of avenues a person can go in with trying to make money online

Blogging
Affiliate Programs
Digital Products
Memberships
Service
Authors
Programming
Hard Goods ( commerce )

And probably all of us know people who stand out above the crowd in each of these avenues.

And probably all of us know people who have seen others succeed and have tried to copy there approach and yet have not even come close to scraping the surface of the success that these other people have attained.

Its not like these other people got started when there was noone else doing it. Most started when loads of people were doing it.

So what really makes the difference? What takes a person from a Good/Average model to a Great/Standout above the crowd model?

Sure we know its " Hard Work " but that isn't the only factor. As im sure many of us on here can say with utter honesty that we are hard workers

Something else makes these people stand out and create almost a brand around their name

I could start naming names but frankly there are far to many.

Some might say, they just picked the right avenue and it was their thing, their niche, there destiny... others might say no...they just have charisma, others might say they came in at the right time, others might say... they knew some people who knew some people and bobs your uncle...

THE REASON I BRING THIS UP IS.....

There are so many avenues that we as entrepreneurs can go in online and non us want to waste time focusing on projects or niches which aren't going to pay off

So my question is 2 fold

1. How do we decide which avenue to go down in building a business online so we dont waste our time in areas that are never going to pay off no matter how many years we put into them?

2. How then do we go from good to great within that avenue to stand above the crowd to the point that people equate our name or our website with that niche i.e I equate Blogging with " Darren Rowse ", I equate Copywriting with Yanik Silver, I equate product creation with Frank Kern and Ed Dale etc etc...

Anyway just throwing this out there, would love to hear your thoughts on it all.

Market research and knowing your prospective buyer inside and out.

Testing, tracking, promotion, tweeking, improving constantly.

There is no "set it and forget it" for any big companies. They are constantly trying to improve and understand their target market and doing things to keep them happy.

Yep but you still have to decide on an avenue. Most can market research an avenue but if BLOGGING really isnt there thing, they can know everything about blogging and people who use them etc etc but ifs not there thing which they may not find out until they are in month 5. its a bit late by then.

What im referring to is, before you even go into an avenue or market or research. How would a person decide which area they are going to enjoy and excel in? maybe blogging isnt for them but ecommerce is.. if you see what i mean

Does a person have to try everything to figure out the one thing that they are good at? And what if they are in the one thing which will make them a lot of money i.e Ecommerce but they are in the wrong niche within that ecommerce

Lol see what I mean, there is no silver bullet. Every person either is just lucky to find what they are good at or they keep failing until they find one thing that works or they accept they will get less but enjoy more an area.

Hey, I think the only person that knows the avenues is the avenuegirl.

Seriously, there's no fixed rule as far as success in this IM thing is concerned. All you have to do is to try as much as you can to carve out a niche for yourself.

Copying the successful people is not a guarantee that you must be successful. There's what is called a TRADE SECRET. And until you identify the trade secret that best suits you, you might still be swallowed up in the crowd.
