Hello fellow warriors, I am in a tough spot. The .com/.net domain names for my niche site keyword are taken. What are some of your thoughts on the value, as well as profitability of .info names? Just want to make sure I dont grab a cheap .info name only to find out that it is horrible for any monetizing efforts.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Google claims .info is treated the same.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

.info is great. Our site is doing very well, it ranks very good and visitor who are looking for information just love it, can not say anything negative about it.

@Bgmcaw - If i knew how many times it was discussed previously i wouldn't have asked again. I searched the records for .info.. and anything with the word "info" came up. try weeding through all that to get one answer. Not trying to be irritating, but looking through thousands of posts with he word info in them is not how I would like to find the answer. But thank you for replying.

@Dvduval - Thanks for the reply, I have read the same thing elsewhere but wanted to know if anyone from here has been successful with .info names. To me the "other" sites are less reliable. But thanks again.

Go for the .org. I've seen a .info on the first page maybe twice? I don't think it's a good idea.

      Here we go again...

      Google the bold keywords...

This does beg the question, have you ever searched for info on Noam Chomsky? How about regular expressions, roman coins, craft ideas, or how to check your page rank? Maybe you've never needed to do some research to find out if New York was a sanctuary city or to find out something about New York transit. Oh, and have you thought about moving your money to a local bank before you go shopping on Black Friday?

I find it quite crazy that people fret over a domain name.
Pick a cool sounding domain and go with it. Whatever it is.

I find it quite ironic that the 2 biggest internet marketing forums
are warriorforum.com and on digitalpoint.com, neither domain
having anything to with the niche.

I also find it quite ironic that the #1 site for selling/buying domains
and appraising domains, is sedo.com. What in the
world is a sedo? Maybe short for selling domains.

        Go and think likewise.

I personally use .com, .net or .org. I avoid the .info if it is a site I want to rank well.
As Carson stated, I don't run into to many .info's when I am looking at competition. I know Big G says it doesn't matter, but I am not convinced of that.

When I run into the problem you are having I simply add modifiers to my keyword phrase and find a good domain that way. I am not sure I have seen much of a difference but I usually put the modifier on the end opposed to the front of the domain.

Good luck finding something you can work with.

@Dondavis - Thank you for your reply. This seems to be the consensus of the .info damains. Although I am sure with enough hard work and long enough time it "could" do well, I am almost sure that a .com/.net and even .org would do infinately better faster. Thank you all for your replies.

It does not matter one iota what domain extension you choose, its about content on the site.

Google wants content content and more content!

    BUT!!!

You have a couple of things to consider if your chosen domain is already in use. If the site that has it is already a well established authority site you have a long road to cut out in order to start ranking your domain. It will be difficult to steel the traffic.

I have inadvertently registered domains that despite all my efforts Google would not even index because the domain already existed and was a well established authority site.

Avoid .info's. They have all kinds of problems. A lot of the .info domains were initially registered for $.99 each and many people bought hundreds of them at a time to build doorway sites. A large portion of these got kicked out of google. Further, .info seems to be a host for more malware than many other domains.

As long as people continue to believe that any of this nonsense is (a) true, and (b) relevant, these conversations will just carry on for ever.

I suspect that the majority of people who believe this stuff "already know that they're right" and they therefore have no need to look at the evidence, or to learn anything.

Some marketers have an emotional attachment to and investment in the opinion (in spite of it being utter nonsense) that .com's "rank higher than .info domains". It's a bizarre belief, if you actually look into it with anything approaching objectivity, but such is life. These people missed out on their recommended readingrecommended reading , or something. Go figure.

So many people believe this nonsense that it's entirely valid for people wanting to sell a site to avoid .info, mind you, because people imagine it "must be worth less", and of course that makes it worth less.

infos are awesome cause they are so cheap. if you buy lots of domains you can save hundreds of dollars with infos. dont let any fools tell you its bad for SEO, thats just dumb. the only disadvantage with infos is that you may lose direct traffic, as most people automatically type in dot com whenever they are going directly to a site. but if all of your traffic is coming from search engines, infos are the way to go

The .com, .org and .net's rank higher when they're initially indexed. At least that's what I've found. So if I get the same phrase in a .net and a .info, the .info will typically be buried while the .net will get much higher on the initial indexage. That's my thoughts on it.

Hah the reason people "see" .info as bad because everyone "knows" they're bad so people try to avoid them as well, all the while spreading the word about how bad they are
