I'll bet I'm not the only one here who feels this way, but I'm kind of tired of subscribing to a list just to get something for free, only to be consistently marketed to every single email after that. Yes, I know it's my choice to sign up, but you have got to realize that people who sign up for your list want to receive information, not sales pitches all the time. I don't know how successful you are if you're doing this, but I'm pretty sure you'll get a much higher open rate in your emails if you stop marketing so much and start sharing. I have gotten to a point where I recognize the name and immediately know that I don't want to read the email. After I get tired of just deleting the emails (which tend to have similar subject lines to other marketers' emails) I end up unsubscribing. I will admit, I don't have the experience of owning a list to market to, but in my personal opinion, it's better to share more than you sell. Whether it's tying your list to your blog and having it distribute your RSS feed so we can see what you're writing about, or simply sharing some articles or advice that have helped you, it doesn't matter. The relationship you're building isn't as good as it could be because of this. For this reason, I do have several emails that I deliberately leave as unread, so I remember that I need to go through and read them. There are only a few names that I actually do this with. |

"Resenting promotion is one of the greatest obstacles to success. People who have issues with selling and promotion are usually broke." - T. Harv Eker Sure maybe the person pitching wasn't presenting enough value for you to consider it worthwhile. Might be a better use of your time to study what was wrong about their promotion and learning from it rather than simply complaining. Become a fan of the pitch...study it, then go make it work for you in a more authentic way that you feel would be more interesting and attractive to people...ugh I'm going to say it -- 'the free line' Sometimes that is beneficial to add and maybe lacking in what you are calling out in your complaint. Just a thought. -S |

It is called burning the list. I try to keep my emails to one per month and make them relevant to my audience. Most people hate spam. I notice that Hulu video is getting complaints about the number of commercials in their videos. Try to place the pitch at the end of the newsletter. |

There is nothing wrong with pitching the list, but I think most list-owners know pitching ALL THE TIME is bad business. I recommend that my clients put special content in the emails that won't be published on the website. This adds tremendous advantages to staying on the list for the subscriber.

The trick is to pitch without making it obvious you're pitching. Educate your readers week after week on the subject at hand. Teach them the ropes, how to perform a certain task or process the average or hard way. Every now and then, remind them that there is a new or easy way of doing it, introducing them to a revolutionary software or something. I feel very comfortable being pitched to when someone is really teaching me something that could improve my business or life. |

Give people the value they're looking for, and they will click through to what you're pitching. I don't try to sell on every email, most of the time I try to provide a good tip. Build up their trust and they will follow. The more you try to sell them, the more they will turn you off. |

If you want something for nothing, you have to deal with emails, so set up an email account just for that reason only, that's what I have done and rarely do I check that email address. It works, don't use your normal address. It will make you go crazy sorting through all that stuff.

I agree, that it is best to figure out what you don't like and learn from it. I have done this as I work on building my own lists. I just want to make a point to some of the newer people who are working on building their list that you don't want to constantly push and promote. People sign up to your list to get something from you, not to be sold to in every email. Give them what they want and they'll be happier, and they'll stay subscribed. Quote:

Always give value , dont always pitch for a deal.Work with your customers over a few months making them aware what your working on and what it may be worth to them in time. That way you will spend less earn more
