Pos and Cons of Own Domain vs subfolder on someone else's domain

I am trying to make a case for a well known local non profit organization to move to its own domain from a subfolder on someone elses.

The non profit is something like "Save the Animals Group" = STAG
They are a subfolder (?) on their hosting company's main site (for cost reasons originally). So their URL is www.designkings.com/STAG

I am proposing www.SavetheAnimalsGroup.com but having thought I knew something about SEO, I am struggling to lock down the rationale. Can you help? I have a few points...

1) Credibility for the organization
2) SEO wise you'd be in control. External links point to your domain not theirs. If anything happened to designkings currently we'd be in a big hole
3) Build up your own "authority" not his
4) Does a subfolder attract authority to the main url more than the subfolder? Are you building up authority for the subfolder if you promote a subfolder? Bit blurry on this area.

Any input will be welcome.
Thanks

JK

How many reasons to you need to allocate $9 bucks?

When it comes about non-profits... they need 27 committeee meetings, 38 times voting... approval from the board of directors... and more meetings

They are the worst clients ever. Nobody is in charge - or nobody dares to make a simple decision, even if it is a no-brainer like in this case.

Actually, being a non-profit they should go for .org! (not .com)

      4. It builds the "authority" of the domain, not the subfolder's!

      This says it all, surely?

I'd be reluctant to add other reasons in case they detracted from the impact of that one. Can you need more than this?!

And they should certainly want, and have, a .org rather than a .com.
