Global Monthly search count is 1900. Should i go into this market?

Hello everyone,

A few minutes ago, i was searching a keyword phrase in Google Adwords keyword tool and got the following results:

Global Monthly searches: 1,900
Local Monthly searches: 1600
Location: United states
Language: English
Local Search Trend: Not consistent (showing many ups & downs in graph)

I am quite a newbie in both internet marketing and also in keyword researches. So i am a little bit confused whether i should go into this niche for selling or doing affiliate marketing.

Please give me your valuable suggestions whether i should go into this niche or not?

Regards,
Shujan

      Hi Daryl,

      Thanks for your suggestions.

Well i might be able to guess something about the competition. But how am i gonna measure or know about the other two things?

      1. Average CPC
      2. Whether an exact match domain is available for a .com

      Thanks.

Market Samurai can tell you all about the competition, never do any guessing on that, it can also tell you average CPC. For the domain go to where you register domains normally and see if it's available. Again you can also do that on Samurai.

One other point, is the 1800 searches for broad or exact match? It may not seem like tons of traffic but if it's a red hot "Buy x product now" buying keyword you could do really well.

Phrase match count: 1900 (Global) & 1600 (Local)
Exact match count: 1000 (For both Global and local)

          What do you think?

For a local keyword, that's a great option. For me, I try to focus on one niche and have my primary money keyword on the homepage and other pages pulling other keywords. It's great to pull the non-competitive with monthly pulls as yours as they all add up.

Set up a PPC campaign for a month for that keyword see if the impressions match the search volume data, if it's around about the same or you are happy with the results close the PPC campaign down and start to attack the keyword organically, via SEO.

It seems a Nice strategy chris.

I just want to be clear about one thing. If i want to do as you said, i think i should be top or near top bidder in PPC.

      Am i right?

Please consider my inexperience if i got it completely wrong :p

    Hi Shujan,

First of all make sure that the results are [exact] and not broad.

If they are, I think you should go into the niche.

I usually take any keyword with at least 1000 exact impressions as long as the domain [keyword].com is available.

    A few cautions though:

    - i don't use keywords which use brand names (for example I would take [cheap electric microwave] but not [whirlpool microwave])

    - to have a reasonable conversion rate make sure that people searching for that keyword want to buy a product (for example people who search for [electric fireplace dimensions] don't want to buy a fireplace, they only want to know the dimensions, they just want free info, however people searching for [chicken houses for sale] will probably want to purchase a chicken coop

    - from the 1900 impressions you should only expect about 30% to become visitors of your website, if you will manage to rank among the first 3 on Google, that means about 600 visitors; if you have a good website and you think things through you should be able to direct 500 of those people to the product website, which means that at a conversion rate of 1% you will make 5 sales per month; for me that is a great number to add to y network of websites

    - the final consideration would be the not consistent local search trend - that's OK. maybe there will be months with no sales and months with 10 sales. if you need the money right away don't go for it, but if you want to start building some passive income sources, I believe that a good 1900 searches keyword is a great start (oh, and you might want to look at the search trends on the long term e.g. from 2004 to the present to make sure that the keyword is not on a downfall)

Finally I will give you an example with one of my websites - chicken houses for sale . co . uk. It ranks second on Google UK. There are only 880 average local searches in Great Britain. From March to September this website makes me at least 120 pounds (200$) per month, sometimes even 200 pounds(300$), but during the winter it's 0$. Am I not happy I bought the domain and went for the keyword? I am really glad!

To find the average CPC use Google Traffic Estimator.

To find if a .com exact match is available you just go to your preferred Registrar (for example GoDaddy) and check if it's available

      Shujan,

There are basically "paid traffic" methods, and "free traffic" methods to get visitors to your site.

You want to choose which one you want to do. People are telling you to run an adwords campaign...be careful. You have to know what you are doing. It costs money.

Free methods are the way to start out in my opinion. Learn all the basics of making money online then move on to pay per click. Don't START with it.

      That's just my opinion!

Thanks very much. It was really very informative for a newbie like me

I have a got a very good idea about the whole process you follow.

The number 1900 was with the phrase search. i just got the exact search count for the phrase. it is 1000 per month, both in Global and Local searches.

what do you think about it?

From 1900 searches you can't get much traffic even when you are on top position. So, it is better to target other keywords with good traffic. But if the competition on that particular keyword(1900 searches) is very small then, you can target. Because you can achieve results with less efforts.

Although I do use keyword tools I never rely on them for numbers. You have to test to work out what the REAL numbers are, what the conversion rate is like etc.

As an example, I target a product related keyword that according to the Google Keyword tool gets 46 searches per month. I'm in the number 1 spot in Google for this keyword and I actually get about 600 visits. Not particularly impressive, except that my conversion rate is so high that with a payout of $20 per commission I'm making just over $1000 a month from this 1 keyword (and have been for a number of months).

1900 'could be' a decent number if the keyword is buyer oriented as this will convert better than a 'browser oriented' keyword - you'll need to work this out for yourself though.

Buyer oriented and browser oriented keywords. Important consideration in case of conversion rate.

Got it and will definitely work on it.

        many thanks

I agree with this. You could be getting 3 visitors a day and make good money. It depends what the visitors are looking to buy and how well your page(s) convert.

    All the best!

    Hi Shujan

If for example I'm writing an article with Ezine, I will choose keywords relating to my product with low competition & not so popular keywords with the Google adwords tool & then write half a dozen related articles with the keywords to my website.

It's better to get on page 1 of the search engines for a less than popular keyword with low competition than, page 3 for a more popular keyword with high competition.

Looks like you're in a local niche and that's a local service based KW, at least based on the numbers.

The advice about exact match and broad above is sound advice.
What about your total keyword count? If this is in fact a local company, what about the other 20 or 30 keywords? What are their values?

If it's local, don't worry about competition....it's easy to beat other comapnies in every single niche I've ever seen.

Conversion is also another big one. [buy sony playstation] renders buyers. [sony playstation] renders few buyers, many techheads, researchers, competition, retailers, media, etc....[chicago plumbing service] is a not similar, that KW renders about 50% buyers, of which a top spot in Google gets about 40% of the traffic and a local website should convert 10% of those to leads or more and close 33% of those leads. Work the numbers backwards to determine if it's a profitable niche.

Testing through PPC is a valid option.
