How much initial investment is needed for a starter to get into IM and set up a pretty moderate site with moderate traffic?

Could be zero money wise. But of course you'd need to offer time to replace that.

There are free web 2.0 sites where you can establish a blog and point articles etc to your offers.

      Weebly is one of those.

The initial investment is to discipline yourself in order to get your own good business idea. Once the idea is there you can always think of the plan to make it work unless you want to buy an already developed idea or plan.

Realistically, you need a couple hundred bucks. You could do everything yourself to save money, but it's really not worth the hassle. Keeping track of your expenses and search engine indexing time is super important! Until you fully recuperate your startup costs you're not turning a profit.

Depends on the business model of your choice..

But it's possible to start with Zero..and knowing how to reinvest your profits to grow it (getting software to automate mundane tasks, outsource things that you don't like and not good at.. etc).

    Just be determined and persistent.
