Question on .mobi websites.

If you have .com domain and a .mobi domain and optimize the .mobi domain for mobile devices does Google select it over the .com when a user searches on their mobile device? I am making the assumption the name before the dot (.) is the same for both domains.

Thanks,

Michael

I'm not sure but I doubt it. Why don't you just try it?

Does anyone else have any experience on how .mobi websites rank when someone uses a smart phone?

In my experience, when a user searches Google on their mobile device, they will get the same relevant results, as they would if they are using a desktop.

Once the user has made a choice, the browser takes care of the rest. The question really is whether the site chosen has a mobile site. If it does, the browser on the mobile phone will automatically detect the .mobi domain or the (m) sub domain being used and display that page. If the site does not, then it will display the regular (hard to see) page.

One thing that we've found really useful is to use Wordpress when setting up landing pages or full blown mobile sites. We even go as far as using a very SEO friendly theme such as Thesis to make sure that we are get that part correct.

Hope that help with your question... have a great day!

I've noticed that most people I have ran into that are using their phones to search are searching with the Yellow Pages instead of Google. The Yellow page ads show the major information that would be shown on a mobi site. The Yellow Page app is on all the phones now and is in your face before you can get to the browser. Has this taken away the need for mobi sites? I'm looking for a good reason that they need the site, being that most people are using YP.

    Thanks,
    Mike
