What ever amount ConnectU settled for, it wasn't enough. I bet
they take turns kicking themselves every day. Every time they
hear that name their eyes well-up with tears.

Well, Suzanne, I've heard of all this stuff but never paid any attention
to it, until just now. I read both links above.

We do have to be careful what we say in public, don't we... ?

Sometimes things are just too apparent, in my opinion of course.

I especially liked the official retort in the second link. But you know,
        sometimes karma's a bitch.

I've heard about this stuff also, mostly as a result of the facebook movie that came out. I bought the book on Kindle which the movie was based on called Accidental Billionaires, but haven't read it yet. I believe that this, plus the information about how his partner got squeezed out are in the book.

Oh my, if only Facebook is owned by Google, the latter would have owned the top three websites in the world!

It's interesting to know how much INVESTMENT it takes to start running a site like Facebook. $500,000!! Gosh!

No wonder we can't rely on buying social networking scripts (which can be found a lot in the market) and expect to run it successfully without proper planning and funding.

As a side, did any of you notice the URL at the end of this infographic...if not go and check it out. What you'll see is a huge affiliate site for online school offers.

Not sure if many of you you guys know this but infographics like this are huge for many top affiliates especially CJ affiliates. They use the graphics as linkbait to get traffic and backlinks to their sites.

So for the creative types out there, here's a service you can provide create infographics post them in popular places (i.e. FB, Twitter, maybe even pay someone on Fiverr to post it to their Twitter or FB account) and see if you could get your graphic to go viral...at minimum, you should get a good number of backlinks.

But if most people didn't notice it or simply do not bother to check it out (including myself LOL), that shows how MUCH response they're getting!

What many people don't realize is that Facebook was unprofitable and bleeding millions in cash for several years initially, and if it wasn't for the big investors who stayed the course it'd have ended up as another has-been phenomenon. It wasn't until 2009 that Facebook finally turned the corner and yielded a relatively modest profit.

Hey Bill - not a problem.

It just goes to show you what can be done, remember, Bankoholic.com (which is a financial affiliate site) that was bought by BankRate for $15 million a couple years ago. The person that owned/ran Bankoholic before it was bought built most of his links by uploading/providing free Wordpress Templates that had anchor text for financial, credit cards, loans and other financial terms in the footers.

@EdgeStorm - just because people didn't notice it, doesn't mean it's not working...again, they also use infographics to gain backlinks and read my second post about Bankoholic.com and using free Wordpress Themes to gain backlinks.

Do you think a lot of people scrolled down to the bottom of Wordpress themes and saw the anchor text for "Credit Cards" and clicked through, probably not, but those backlinks sure did help Bankholic in SE rankings to the tune of a $15 million purchase, so in the end, they aren't doing things like this for no reason.

Don't get me wrong. I never said that it's not working. I was referring to the response from people who came across the image NOT from the search engines. (Just like how it is pasted on this thread) It's all about conversion rates my friend.

If you look at statistics and results of the probability of people clicking on a live link of a banner, you would already notice how low the clickthrough rates are. So imagine a banner/image where the URL is not even clickable and where the reader needs to manually type it in the browser...

It's working probably due to high traffic volume.. thousands and thousands of people are looking at it every single day.

If you don't believe me, you can try do a survey of just around 100 people and ask how many amongst them actually take the effort to type the URL on their browser.

But I understand what you're trying to convey is the SE rankings and backlinks that they're getting from infographics like this. I have no comments on that one. Like what you're saying, it's most probably working for them through this method.
