How To Transfer From One Computer To Another?

What can I do to transfer the files and programs on my old computer which is still working to my new lap top so the file icons all appear the same way they do on my old computer and all the files are in their separate folders so they are usable?

    A few options:
    1) Connect your 2 computers to a network and simply copy the folders.

    2) Connect your 2 computers to a network and use software like goodsynch to copy. That's good if you keep using the first computer.

    3) If you can't build a network for some reason, buy an external hard disk drive. Move folders from PC 1 to external harddrive. Then move to PC2. Or just keep using the external. That's what I'm doing.

These options work for folders and files, not for installed applications.

When you say installed applications does that mean Filezilla will not be transferred? When I bring it up on my computer Fillezilla has my passwords and usernames and everything like my web site files in it. Does this get transferred using an external hard drive?

You might want to pay someone to do this or get a family member/friend to help you as you sound a bit clueless and will mess this up for sure

For instance, your usernames and passwords for Filezilla, may be stored in the registry or maybe a file.

This makes a huge difference to backing up information for specific programs.

It sounds like you are trying to copy an entire windows install and have it identical on another pc/laptop?

        Windows doesn't work that way.

You need to reinstall Windows, then all the programs you use, some you can import data, some you will need to re-enter it.

Bookmarks, mail settings, e-mail all need to be exported then re-imported.

Sorry but you can't just drag and drop your old system onto a new one.

Do a clean install and then install each program as needed.

I think you may have given me the key to the problem. Before I did the restore after transferring this online back up system from my old still working computer to a new lap top, the back up system asked me to check if I wanted the old windows system to be restored. I unchecked it since I already had windows just installed on the new laptop. So if I would have checked the restore windows box MAYBE I WOULD HAVE HAD EVERYTHING RESTORED EXACTLY LIKE IT WAS ON THE OLD COMPUTER INSTEAD OF JUST GETTING A LIST OF FILES?

          What do you think?

I love Dropbox - Home - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy.

I keep my active project files on it, and it automatically stays in sync between my desktop and laptop computers. Free accounts get you 2 GB of storage.

Beyond that, I also have an 8 GB flash drive for carrying around files. But as Defunct said, this is only for documents and files... doesn't work for installed programs.

There are still people having issues with moving data from one computer to the other? I guess if they both had the same operating system and you got the registry to move over that would work but why get a new computer if you aren't running a new OS.

There is one easy and almost foolproof way of doing this - buy a USB TRANSFER cable (not a regular one, but something with male connectors on both ends). Here's an example of what you can pick up at Best Buy - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex%26...sfer&cp=1&lp=1

"Sorry, the page you requested was not found."

      I can't post links, but Googling "
usb transfer cable" and then "how to use a usb transfer cable" should do it for anyone looking into that solution.

I've got a Linksys router but the usb transfer cable would work too. I just transferred all of my important files to my laptops. However, I will be installing the programs fresh on the new computers.

If there's an easy way to transfer installed programs with all their settings and all the files that are installed that are not in the program folder, such as the files it may install into Windows system folder, plus all the registry info stored, let me know.

Dropbox is the best program you can use for files and documents, that is what I use. You can also try transferring the folders in the program files because you can install some of them into your new laptop. Sorry if Im not much of help, will follow this thread in case there is a better way.

Moving data and moving software are two different things. If all you want to do is move your documents, simply copy/paste your documents files and you'll be done.

If you want to replicate your entire setup on a new computer, you need to clone or mirror your hard drive. Then when you boot up your new machine, it will look exactly like the old one, right down to your desktop icons.

What service were you using? When I restored my PC with Mozy a few years ago, it moved everything perfectly back into place. Every folder and file.

Like Cindy said...you can't just do a backup and restore and expect installed applications to transfer over. Many applications are licensed and installing an application, like filezilla, MS Office etc...isn't a matter of just copying a folder over.

Filezilla can be pointed to any folder on your hard drive once you move data over using a usb hard drive, online backup/restore etc...heck, I've used my ipod to back up user data.

The other problem that I think that you might be having is that if you are moving from one operating system to another...such as having XP on your old box and Windows 7 on the new one, the folder structure is different. Folders are named a little differently, I believe.

The easiest thing to do is to create a folder on the desktop or in a place where you will be able to find it and dump all of your data from your old pc into that folder. I would suggest a simple copy and paste...using a backup utility creates a backup file which is then used to restore data...I think the extension is .bk and is only used to restore data using the backup utility.

Hope this makes some sense and helps some...
