Illustrated Ebook Covers? Toons, graphics question

In one night I've gotten more data on doing covers for people's ebooks.

I did notice how so many ebooks looked so cookie cutter it's tough to tell if you've bought that ebook or if it's a scam ebook.

A friend is a marketing genius and record producer and he just stopped me on the front porch and told me toons for ebook covers would be where the money is.

I figured that most marketers can't afford a cartoonist and since I have many styles of illustration I cover everything from westerns, to sci-fi, to romance and he suggested if an IMer is small time then split for revenue.

However, I'm finding far more time consuming to find an honest IMer so I have to figure out how much to charge and who's naughty or nice.

So the question is how important are covers to you as a marketer and what would you feel would be a fair price or exchange?

One of the things to keep in mind is that there is a boatload of software out there for creating ecovers. All the tedious tasks of rotating the ecover, adding reflections and shadows, as well as adding an image to the spine is all handled by just a few mouse clicks.

The only real talent needed for the DIY guys is a bit of creativity. If you want to sell ecovers as a service you just need to add good ol' salesmanship, otherwise known as marketing.

And the market is swamped with folks who work in countries where a $1 goes a mile and then back again.

The best advice is the test advice. Create a small portfolio and market the thing. Test cartoon styles, prices, ad copy, the whole nine yards. A good place to start is the For Hire section here, or run a WSO, or both.

If you can find loyal customers who will create a lot of products and recommend you to others you could be off and running.

And fwiw, the idea of trying to trade the cost of an ecover by splitting revenue with the product creator is DOA. I can't imagine any serious product creator not just forking over the small amount it costs to do ecovers for a split of the action. And if I found one I would run.

Create that portfolio. Some of us would love to see it...
